#954 Rain hair

Rain hair

You know when you get caught in the rain and your fabulous hairdo turns into a wet, frizzy mess? Well, I say that’s a good thing. Because hear me out.

Let’s talk about how much time, money, and effort we put into the managing and upkeep of our golden locks of dead skin cells. How about a lot? Now, don’t get me wrong, I play the game too. I wash my hair, condition it up, gel it up, shake it up. I prepare it for the day and check in periodically to see how it’s doing. Any rogue locks, fallen bangs? What’s new in the slowly-going-bald corners? And how’s that back-of-the-neck beard coming in this month? I spend way too much time on it. And my hair looks like a squirrel that’s been run over on the highway for a few weeks.

Our pals over at Wikipedia make hair sound like the Sun or fresh water, saying in their snooty tone that head hair has ‘gained an important significance in nearly all present societies as well as any given historical period throughout the world.’ But then again, those eggheads can make anything sound pretty serious. It’s just hair, after all.

I say maybe the army got it right when they instituted crew cuts after World War I trench warfare gave everyone lice and fleas. Maybe there’s something to be said about the no-maintenance plan, the low-maintenance plan, or the no-plan at all. Because whenever I walk by someone with hair just flying everywhere, all unkempt and full of knots, dirty dreads, and dead leaves, I get jealous for a second. Think of the free time they have! I mean, sure, they stick out. But… what if we all got in the game? Then maybe we’ve got something. Then maybe everyone’s garden would look immaculate, the gyms would get really crowded, and the libraries would run out of books. You’d just have to put up with all these shaggy, scraggly sasquatches walking around, that’s all.

And that’s what I kind of like about rain hair. It’s a temporary escape from the Hair Prison we live in. When everyone shows up at the movies or mall with the wet and frizzy flyaways, the hair matted to their foreheads, and the hair spray dripping and stinging their eyes, it’s like yeah, we all look like a mess. But the rain sure does wash away expectations, too.

AWESOME!

The dream

  1. Back in high school, being able to slick back my usually boring hair after a good rain made me feel just

    AWESOME!

  2. This one is underrated judging by the comment volume, imo. If there’s anything that can collectively free us from pretension and superficiality, it’s rain hair. And it’s not like we have a choice. Nature wins. Leave the brolly at home. Awesome.

  3. Sometimes, when you’re having a bad day and walking home, raining.. it just helps you flow it all out, ya know?

Also, the dollar stores never have the umbrellas when you need them.

  4. You see, the thing is, everyone else’s rain hair always looks less bad than your own rain hair. Rain hair is only awesome on those occasions when you actually WANT to get drenched. But it’s REALLY awesome then, so i’ll let this one slide.

Also, hair isn’t made of dead cells – it’s made of keratin and whatever other minerals happen to be floating around in your body at the time of hair production.

  5. I loved your description of your hair.. That was hilarious! I love your site too! It brings to light all the subtleties of life, the things that we take for granted. It helps us forget the bad things in life by remembering all the little good things. And that, my friend, is

    AWESOME!

P.S. what was up with Big Foot? lol

  6. It sucks when It sucks hen you pass the point of no return when walking somewhere then you get hit with the worst downpour of your life. You don’t want to pull your cellphone out and have someone pick you up and you look stupid.

I’ve reached the point where I could get no more wet and my shoes were full. But when you get home the first thing you do is strip down to your skivvies and wrap a towel around that hair or just fluff it up a bit. Either way you know you won’t have to take a shower that night.

  7. I lived with bedhead as my “hairstyle” all the way through University. It did save me a lot of time, but I mainly used it for sleeping. Also, other students I had never met used to use any excuse to meet me, as I was somewhat of a curiosity to them – and that’s why I stopped doing it. I just couldn’t take all the hair based attention – that’s what I was fighting against!

  8. This should be paired with damp shoulders from running from the house to the car. At that point, I almost want to just stand out in the rain and get thoroughly drenched. If you’re halfway there already, may as well go the full mile.

  9. Rain hair is great because you can suddenly smell your own shampoo and it just smells fantastic :) All the shampooey goodness comes wafting out!

    1. YES! i love how you can smell your shampoo when it rains. and i love how the rain gives natural curls to your hair

  10. I keep listening to the rumor talk about receiving boundless online grant applications so I have been looking around for the finest site to get one. Could you advise me please, where could i find some?

  11. Very nice info and straight to the point. I don’t know if this is really the best place to ask but do you guys have any ideea where to employ some professional writers? Thanks in advance :)

  12. Does anyone know if reptiles sneeze?
I know they can yawn(have you aver seen that vid of a snake yawning? Awesome!), but can they SNEEZE?
    time for Google!

  13. Yes! And it is even better when you are having an awful hair day. You walk into a meeting with hair flying all over your face while the strange looks follow you as you take your seat, but the only words you need to say are “I got caught in the rain.” and your worries are gone.

  14. i think it’s even more awesome when i didn’t brush my hair and can use rain as an excuse for the frizzball on my head

  15. This is my favorite post, other than strategic trick or treating :) Love it. I prefer my hair in the rain.

  16. I love rain hair and rain face! By that I mean no makeup because it all washed away from the rain. Seeing people come out of a storm, soaked, breathless laughing, it’s so cute and refreshing to see people without caked on makeup and caked up hair

  17. I love what the rain does to my hair! It’s usually a pretty frizzy mop, but a bit of rain smooths it out into perfect curls for a minute. It’s my good hair day. Awesome!

  18. I just love it when the rain washes away all expectations~
hair-do’s, stuff and things matter differently…rainbows appear where you maybe never saw them before and you have faith in the silver lining.

  19. I love rain hair. I think there’s something a bit sexy about it. I think my hair always looks best after drying from rain hair with no brush or hair dryer involved.

  20. I love rain hair -when it dries, it does what it wants but it is so soft, so free, so unstructured. I love walking without a wicked, dangerous umbrella when it is warm – the feel of the rain as it runs down my face and runs through my hair…

  21. I’ve always liked playing/chilling in the rain, partially because i liked seeing my mom get pissed off after I entered the house SOAKING wet, but also because I think the smell of the grass/dirt after the rain is the best smell there is (apart from pies that just came out of the oven, of course). I also liked how it felt as if I were in a movie, all dramatical and sad, so I’d turn on the radio to a calm song and pretend it was in the actual scene.
