#839 Really good candy with your bill at a restaurant

andes-mints-at-olive-gardenMints are mints.

Sure, they can be circle or square, chewy or hard, powdery or smooth, but they’re still mints, man. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

But after a fat meal with friends, when your body’s Food-Chomping Engine is revving for some afterburn, there’s nothing sweeter than getting a surprise treat with your bill. Because let’s face it, paying for the meal is no fun. There’s all the who ordered what, all the mental math acrobatics, and all the tipping awkwardness. Plus, all this post-meal hub-bub happens at a cloudy table full of Garlic Breath and Beermouth.

Yeah, we need something to lighten the mood and the stench around here. Something like a handful Andes chocolates, a spoonful of candy-coated fennel seeds, or some good old-fashioned lollipops.

AWESOME!

  1. Ah Hell grabbing a pocketful of those mints will feed me for an extra day….. dont look at me like that … times are tough and I do what it takes to survive

  2. And let us not forget the wholesome goodness of restaurants that serve fresh fruit at the end.

  3. I like the big, creamy mints that are solid, packed sugar until you bite them and they sort of dissolve in your mouth. But only when they come wrapped individually – not when they’ve been sitting in that bowl on the hostess’s podium. Those look like they’ve been there for years.

  4. Is it outback or olive garden that does Andes? One of them does for sure… although I have noticed since hard times started, there is a downturn in the dinner mint hand outs. Evidently, fresh breath is low on the “needs” list.

  5. I’ll take any free candy available. Even if, as Megan warns about above, they’re left in a bowl at the entrance. Particularly the spoonful of fennel seeds at Indian restaurants. Yummy!

I think paranoia about things left out in bowls has gotten out of hand. I remember some girl in college quoting to me a “fact” that claimed that they did a study on a bowl of mints at a restaurant, and that they did a chemical composition test, and they were “40% urine”! 40%! Does anyone know how high that is? You could soak those mints in a jar of urine for a week and a half and you wouldn’t get to 40%! I mean, I’m sure there is some trace urine on the mints – but I mean, there probably was in my food that night too, am I right?

My view: Chomp down on all the free stuff you can get!

  6. Well, you’ve touched a nerve with my wife and me. We went to The Olive Garden in Nashville sometime before we got married, and had the coolest waiter ever. We asked him for a few extra mints, and he provided. He gave us an entire to-go cup, stuffed to the brim with them. That guy ruled, and his $20 tip proved it!

  7. Oh yes, mints rule. Thanks for the thought. Sometimes when I see what you guys are writing I just applaud in front of my computer and remember how beautiful it was the last time it happened to me.

    Well done yet again. :D

  8. chad – it’s olive garden. i was there on saturday. my friends asked for extras and the waitress gave us each two… i love olive garden.

  9. The best sweets I got after a meal was a box of Thorntons chocs on New Year’s Eve at our local chinese restaurant.

A close second was the tablet given with the bill after we had lunch the other day.

  10. One time after going into Olive Garden (the nerve!) didn’t give me andes mints. I walked right up to the hostess stand and asked for some. They handed me a whole handful straight from the fridge they’re kept in. NUMMY!

  11. Hm…I like mints though. There’s this restaurant I love that has these big, chunky sparkling mints that have a slight apple-y taste. And this other restaurant that has these fat mints that look like green marbles. I like places that have fresh fruit, too. Am I weird ’cause I like mints? Of course not. I’m an awesome ninja. :D
