#739 The sound of barely frozen puddles cracking when you step on them

Crisp breezes chip at your cheeks as you shiver and slide to school. Blades of grass are stiff with frosted dew on their tips, your breath puffs in cold clouds in front of you, and little puddles on the sidewalk get that thin film of ice across the tops, just waiting for you to do what you gotta do.

Yes, when you’re slip-shuffling half asleep, buried under your backpack, there’s just something sweet about stomping those frozen puddles and filling the still and quiet walk with a nice crisp CRACK.

After you do the deed, you trudge on against the biting wind with an extra spring in your step and twinkle in your eye, because came across the frozen puddle first and you busted it up good.

Let’s face it: that crack is so permanent, so satisfying, and so completely

AWESOME!

Crack the pud and smile(Thanks so much for an awesome year, everybody.)

  1. that is truly the best part about winter now that i think about it. And its nice to get the bugger puddles before they turn to black ice

    1. Sometimes you walk by a big, already-cracked puddle, but then you notice a tiny little puddle left uncracked right beside it.

      You know what to do.

  2. I love this!!! I remember the satisfaction I used to get when I was the first to the frozen puddle…a cheeky grin on my face and then CRACK! It was all mine…AWESOME!

  3. ice theme for the past two days? whats tomorrow gonna be, putting action figures in cups of water into the freezer?

  4. Definitely fun, but you need to be careful of the deeper puddles – particularly the ones in potholes or next to the curb. If you mistakingly try to crack that ice, you’re going to end up with what we called, the dreaded “soaker”.

This usually resulted in you walking into your classroom, with a slushy, frozen boot, jeans that are wet up to your shin, and a blue and prune-y foot shoved in the bottom of your boots.

    Man, soakers were the WORST.

However, if you get the puddle just right, a little light puddle cracking is totally awesome.

    1. Oh man, you totally brought me back Freddo. I have suffered from many, many prune-y foots. The worst is when it’s so bad you have to turn around and go home to change.

  5. Common the second day of summer and you’re talking about frozen puddles????????? Save it for the winter!!!!!!!!!

    1. emma, if it makes you feel any better, I’ve never gotten to surf giant waves over coral reefs and great white sharks.

  6. Best to do it in water-proof boots. That way, even if you get caught by a deep puddle in disguise, you can laugh at it saying:

    “:P, gotcha!”

  7. I have a vivid memory of doing this when I was barely walking, maybe 2 or 3 years old. It’s my favorite parts of winter.

  8. Everytime I see these, I HAVE to step on them, my friends always look at me weird. But come on, the crunch is so satisfying. :D

  9. Its like the winter version of stepping on dry leaves in the fall… another one of my faves.

  10. Whoever did the ice demolishing in that photo did NOT do a great job. Me+my friends are pros, and we have mud-sogged boots to prove it. We are awesome ninjas. :D

  11. “That crack is so permanent?” Not if it freezes again that night!
    Then you can repeat tomorrow…Bazinga!
    Happy Belated Birthday;D

  12. I do like that. Even though, as a fat girl, I find the sound of most ice cracking disconcerting.
