#717 Sleeping with one leg under the covers and one leg out

rad radHome temperature is important.

Head in the freezer, hands in the oven, whatever your move, just make it. Pick a temp, baby, then bake it. Pump up the thermostat, bang on the rad, or crank up the air. If you’re hot, ditch the sweats, if you’re cold, slip on slippers.

Home temperature is important.

If you’re not feeling comfortable you just won’t be happy. Roommates want it hotter, spouses want it cooler, and you may want it jussssssssst right, so you’ll need to tweak dials and add layers until you figure it out.

And you eventually will. And you’ll think everything is great. And everything will be great.

Until it comes.

Bedtime.

head_in_fridge_72dpiYes, before you flick out the lights and slip into golden slumbers, you must first guess your Sleep Comfort Zone (SCZ or “See-Zee” for short). And See-Zee’s ain’t easy. If you’ve ever woken up with the shivers or the sweats, then you added too many blankets or slept too nude.

If you’re on your own, there are ceiling fans, heating vents, and your general sweatiness to consider. If you’re with a pet or a partner, you’ve got double the hot-breath factor and a lot more sweaty legs under the covers.

If you’re like me then your eyes might blink open in the middle of the night as you realize that you’re uncomfortable. And if this happens, then just hook yourself a solid and toss one leg out of the covers and one leg under them.

Also known as the Toe Vent.

AWESOME!

  1. Its amazing – how does he know what we consider awesome? It’s almost like he’s one of us …

    AWESOME!

  2. The toe vent is technically called the leg radiator or heal heat exchange. You know, if you want to be all technical and stuff.

  3. Love the toe vent or even “whole leg” vent. In the dead of summer, sometimes I end up with the sheet just draped across my bum.

    1. Yup – my wife and I do the same. It’s totally key to bedtime temperature regulation. That one leg can give off excess bed heat, and bring in the necessary ambient coolness.

      AWESOME.

  4. I ALWAYS sleep like this! I’m too cold if I have both legs out of the covers, and I get too hot if I sleep completely covered.

    Definitely AWESOME

  5. So so so true. This little tid bit of awesomeness should be read just before “in good times and bad”…

  6. Haha this is awesome! I love this! I always sleep with one leg out from under the covers. It’s so comfortable.

  7. I do this all the time. I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t tuck in my covers anymore since I know I’m going to be sticking one or both of my feet out at some point. My mom thinks it’s weird, though.

  8. . . . and I thought I was the only person who used the toe vent method to regulate my sleeping temperature comfort!

  9. I call it my radiator leg…Add to this the pleasure of having a pillow between your knees when sleeping on your side… they go together for me!

    Hah!

  10. I love this site but I have to dissagree with this one.

My feet, even if it’s only my feet, have to be under the covers. You don’t know what’s lurking on the other side of the foot board. You wake up in the morning with your toes eaten off!

    1. That’s the thing, isn’t it? I’ve always got my regulatory leg ready for regulating, and sometimes, in the middle of the night, I wake up and realize that ANYthing could reach out and grab it.

  11. I NEED to sleep with one leg out of the bed
the only other choice is not being able to sleep
plus the window must be open at all times to assure rest!

  12. Love doing this!
Though I must admit Paranormal Activity has slightly ruined the Toe Vent for me.

  13. Just discovered this site today and it’s most definately Awesome! I find myself says “Yes!” to so many of the posts, but this one just cracked me up…. laying in bed right now rocking the one leg out of the covers.

  14. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. I was eating at a restaurant last night and there was a little baby rocking the leg vent!

  16. When I sleep all for one or two hours, I sleep also with one leg under the covers and one leg out.
And I do that specially in a hot summer.
It gives me a free feeling.
When the night goes on, I will take my two legs under the covers.
Usually is that because I get could.

  17. Who dosent do this ?! But i get freaked a bit when i hear a creek in my room … I pull my foot in after that.

  18. it’s almost like he’s a mind reader that reads all the tiny random thoughts in r head that we consider……AWESOME!!

  19. I love doing this so much I usually put a whole leg out!! This is great for body temperature problems that need to be solved fast!! It feels like your about to melt and that toe/leg just hits the spot!! This is officially…….. AWESOME!!

  20. I’ve agreed with almost every thing on this list so far (1000-718) But I just never found this comfy. Then again, I am never warm enough… Horrible circulation keeps me cold all the time :( Not awesome
