#287 When your child reads you a bedtime story

Once upon a time you had a baby.

Over those first few years you had ups and down, good times and bad, lots of laughs and lots of tears. You spooned applesauce off chins, you washed off their skin, and you walked them to their first day of school.

And as they grow up and grow older, as they grow taller and as they grow bolder, it’s beautiful seeing their tiny eyes sparkle with little pops of understanding of the world around them.

It’s a beautiful moment when your little one takes a book from your hand … and bumbles through a story that they want to share with you.

Once upon a time you read to your baby.

And now they’re reading to you.

AWESOME!

  1. As my grown daughter’s now hold their precious little ones in their arms during story time…”MY grand- babies”…with tears streaming down their faces and I show concern.. they say, “Mom, joy doesn’t always wear a smile.” and I can smile, as their little ones take the books and begin to read, all in a circle of love:)

  2. This is awesome. My son loves to “read” me stories. He can’t read yet though. He will have me read it then he “reads” back what he remembers and/or what he can figure out from the pictures, but it is still precious. Nothing better.

    1. My daughter is at that stage too and it truly is awesome.

I also love when we get to the part in the story where she remembers the words and can finish the sentence for me. She can now “read/remember/deduce from pictures” most of Green Eggs and Ham :)

  3. I don’t have kids, nor did I babysit that often, nor did the kids at the summercamp where I worked read any bedtime stories to me.

However, a drunk person reading me a story is almost the same, right?

  4. This kinda makes me wanna cry, Neil. Everytime I think of how much my little girl has grown up, it makes me sad and happy at the same time.

She is getting at that age where she is beggining to read very well and will always take over a book when we are reading together. Its so cute to watch her read and sound out the words she doesn’t know yet and then see her face when she gets that 10 letter word right.
I just can’t believe that she will be 6 next week. Oh, how the time does fly. It feels like as soon as I had her, time sped up. There’s never enough hours in the day to enjoy my kids as much as I want.

    1. Bekah, (and for anyone else who might be interested), here are a few favs and classics, as an ECE and in our family, we shared…
Generations and gender friendly; inter-active, fun, humorous and heart-warming too:
“When we were young” and “Now we are SIX”, both by AA MILNE
      “NO more elephants!”
      “The Forgetful Bears”
“The Big Orange Splot” Daniel. M. Pinkwater
“The Gift of Acabar”, Ogmandino and Buddy Kaye(a novel)
We never had much money while my children were growing, but we were always book (and song) rich!!!
My grown children have said the memories nearest and dearest to their hearts are the times we shared snuggled with a story. I can see stars for miles and miles in their eyes and now my grand-childrens…this is their true story! AND my heart sings… CHERISH:)

      1. My daughter has mounds and mounds of books. Lately I’ve been buying her all my favorites from my childhood. School really has her interested in Dr. Seuss, too. So I’m trying to buy her all of his books, also.

        1. Bekah, I have two words for you: Public. Library. We pretty much read the whole kids section of our local library – for free! (except for late fines…) Geektween had some favourites that we got out again and again!

  5. I have to say, this is pretty awesome:) My son read me ‘Hop on Pop’ last night – he is 5 – and I was just like, wow, he is the greatest, most clever person in the world. Wow. Drunk people just don’t do this book justice, trust me;)

  6. as a teacher it is always awesome to hear about kids reading to their parents. It is even more awesome when a student who couldn’t read at all in September is reading whole books now, without help! That spark you talked about is really the best part of teaching!

    1. Don’t you think “Off To School” and “Fun with Dyck and Jane” books should be brought back?
I mean reading is at the root of all learning!
You might me interested in seeing this on the inet: “The MouseTranaut”, by Maria Sopova
It’s an awesome for both students and teachers.

      1. Correction:
        “The MouseTronaut” by Marya Sopova
Both a great story and learning tool too:)
And Cudos to teachers like you who Care-alot!

  7. It’s also awesome when they can read and comprehend well enough to play Apples to Apples with you.

    1. True Apples to Apples story with my daughter as the judge… Green apple card: Graceful. Winning red apple card: Hellen Keller

  8. My nephew has started reading this school year, and a while ago he read me a story…I’m such a proud aunt!

  9. I’m not a mother I’m only 20 but I did spend some time in Ethiopia, Africa teahing English… There was one little boy who I read a book to… He wanted to read to me so he read me a book in his language Amharic. He could tell I didn’t understand what he was saying so he pointed at the pictures and acted it out. Precious!

  10. This reminds me of the book “Love You Forever”. I get all teary whenever I read it….*Happy sniffle*

    1. That book ALWAYS makes me cry!!! I had to hide it from my brothers when they were little cuz it was their favorite book and it made me and mom both cry. I bought it for my daughter when she was little and I still cry when I read it.

      1. I was a special ed. teacher and every time I read this to my students it was a challenge to hold back the tears! They loved hearing this one. Amazing book!

      2. I cry every time! I didn’t see this comment yet, and posted about that book on someone else’s comment above.

  11. I do not have children because I am pratically a child myself. But, when I see my 3-year-old cousin, she “reads” to me and it’s absolutely adorable. :)

  12. My daughter is 23; we still read to each other when we have a good book to share and a long car trip. A favorite memory (and video) is her “pretend reading” Quick as a Cricket.

  13. Whoever reads to you it’s awesome… I remember my grandma reading to me when I was little (only she was doing that and I loved it) and then, not so long ago I was at my friend’s house, just sitting on a couch and talking when he gets up, takes a book and starts to read me a story, some kind of a Persian fairytale… It was pretty special (awesome!!!) because no one else ever did that and people don’t do that when they grow up so… I don’t think I’ll ever forget it :)
