I was the Mini Golf King.
Yes, back in those blurry late 80s there wasn’t a course that could trip me up. Slippery slopes, puddle patches, shady piles of windswept maple keys were all no match for my well-practiced whacking of that neon pink ball. Smack it off the chewed-up mat, bounce it off the windmill arms, and let it slowly straighten before dropping right into the hole.
That was my game.
The sound of a golf ball falling into the cup is the bounce-a-round sound of hole-finishing satisfaction. Whether you just finished smacking dented balls off tree trunks, chipping through the rough, or twelve-putting your way to the finish line, it really doesn’t matter.
Because that final shot always sounds the same.
It’s the sound of satisfaction going down the drain.

“I started a little project in my sorority Delta Zeta at Michigan Tech University where I started giving The Book of Awesome to my roommate to thank her for being such an AWESOME roommate. Her job was to read a couple pages a day and add her own AWESOME things. Then she passed it on to the next woman. The criteria for passing it on is mostly to say “thank you,” “congratulations,” “cheer up,” or whatever! I’ve loved watching how excited all the women have gotten about this! When it’s time to pass it on they get all mischievous and try to figure out where it’s gonna go next. My sorority took its annual group pictures today so we brought along The Book of Awesome! p.s. Considering that I’m terrible at mini-golf, the ball falling into the cup is a sweet, sweet sound indeed.
I’m quite terrible at anything sports related, so this is definitely very awesome. :)
Having played golf during my half of my high school career and being terrible at it, this sound was especially satisfying and especially awesome! :)
in my town, theres a putt putt place right next to a movie theater and ice cream place.

Fun mini-golf story: when my mom was pregnant with my older brother, her and my dad had a disagreement over what his name would be… so naturally, they settled it with 18 holes of mini-golf. She lost by 1 stroke… now his name is Sam instead of Henry.

I just gave my mom “The Book of Awesome” for her 58th birthday on Saturday – she loved it!! I knew it was going to be a perfect gift. You’ve made gift giving a lot easier…thanks for writing the book, lol. I look forward to reading the website everyday too. At the end of sometimes a VERY long day, it’s good to remember all the awesome stuff out there.

hahahaha…I was wondering why so many people are writing in today. I knew golf has become extremely popular, AND Neil Pasricha AND his blog. I finally clue in when I re-read the beginning AND realize, it’s a contest AND now I know what this Galley-book copy is, AND to win would be like the sound of the ball in the cup AND beautiful bells, whistles and lights of a hole in one at the mini golf AND many more days of Awesome…Awesome!!!

This satisfying sound always brings back memories of going to the beach 4 hours from home and playing putt-putt. The only downside is the last hole that transports the golf ball to the holding unit, leaving you with an unsatisfactory plunk from deep within an underground pipe.

EXCEPT WHEN IT GOES IN THE CUP THAT IS BEING DRUNK OUT OF AT THE NINETEENTH HOLE.
Golf is a cool game, I like it! It makes me very happy and leisure when I’m tired of working.
