#991 Really, really old Tupperware

Watch your retinasFound in dusty kitchen cupboards and dishwasher top-shelves across this wide, great land, really, really old Tupperware is as handy today as it was twenty, thirty, forty years ago. That famous Tupperware “burping seal” still holds strong, and you can bet your boombox that banana bread will stay moist, those chopped celery sticks crisp, that leftover lasagna slice fresh. Yes, all is well in this tight vacuum-sealed Chamber of Taste-Preservation.

Really, really old Tupperware is mostly found in three colors: Stovetop Green, Pylon Orange, or The Core Of The Sun Yellow (pictured). Optional features include novelty 1950s floral patterns or deep tomato stains, from that time someone put leftover chili in there and shoved it in the back of the freezer for two years.

One thing I enjoy doing is thinking about all the different kinds of food a particular piece of Tupperware has tupperwared shut over the years. Apparently Tupperware has been around since 1946, so we’re talking about the full tastebud timeline — from lard burgers, creamed corn casseroles, and Jello salads to hemp brownies, parsley soup, and tofu cookies to pizza pockets, Hungry Man leftovers, and astronaut ice-cream pellets.

Really, really old Tupperware has been there, sealed that, and lived to tell the tale. It’s a throwback to the simpler life, when things like airtight seals meant something. Something real. Something honest.

Something worth believing in.

AWESOME!

Hey everyone!

Last year we got disappointing news in October. Within a couple months of being on sale The 2012 Page-A-Day Calendar of Awesome completely sold out! It was too late to print more so there were none available leading up to Christmas.

The good news is we’ve just created a 2013 Page-A-Day Calendar of Awesome! It’s got about 25% all-new content which hasn’t appeared in the blog or any of the books. And it has just gone available for pre-order so for those looking for an early birthday or Christmas present I’d encourage you to grab one soon.

Meanwhile, for those who’ve been asking, I’m spending a lot of my time these days writing the The 2014 Page-A-Day Calendar of Awesome! But let’s chat about that one next year.

Stay awesome always,

Neil

Pre-order from Amazon or Barnes&Noble

NEW! Pre-order directly from the publisher Chronicle Books and use the special code word “Awesome” (without the quotes) for 25% off plus free ground shipping in the US!

  1. OH MY GOSH! Are you serious? I can go get next year’s calendar now?! I must go a-searching for it. I was lucky and I was able to get last year’s calendar. I’m pretty sure I bought it kind of early…. and the awesome thing on today’s is something I do A LOT. I like to save the soft middle for last.
I don’t have any old tupperware, but my grandma does. It brings back some great memories spending the night at her house whenever I break one of these bad boys out. Orange. Very orange.

  2. My grandma passed away a few months ago, but this made me think of her and smile because she totally had some old-school Tupperware. Old Tupperware is indeed awesome! :)

  3. Gotta love them old Tupperwares. Tried and true veterans of the lunch world. Also, I want that calendar. 25% all-new content! 25% all-new awesomeness! I can’t wait.

  4. That old tupperware in those horrendous colors are a staple of my childhood…I remember them fondly. I inherited some from my mom, complete with stains and first-microwave-oven cooking stains. They remind me of dinners of days gone by, family here and gone.

I got that great calendar! So pleased there will be another!

  5. Yay! I was one of those unlucky people who weren’t able to get the 2012 calendar when they sold out so quickly! Time to go grab the 2013 calendar before the same thing happens.

My tupperware drawer at home is a total mess.. it needs a serious organizing effort, so I can dig up those really orange ones from the back!

  6. Unrelated comment, but something funny happened yesterday that I thought this group would get a kick out of..

At the 4th of July Fireworks event here in San Diego, there was some computer glitch that sent up ALL the fireworks at the same time.. that’s right – we were treated to what was supposed to be 20 minutes of fireworks in 15 seconds. Trust me – it was pretty intense! Lots of confusion followed, where no one really knew what happened.

But those were the loudest and brightest 15 seconds I’ve ever seen!

    Awesome? :)

    1. Believe it or not I just saw a news story on this on the Canadian National News!

        1. Someone told me about it at work and told me I had to go find the video and watch it. I bet it was great. There’s 2 sides to this. The awesomeness of all of it going off but then the disappointment that it was over so quickly.

    2. Ha ha! Yes, I saw this in the news, too, and thought of you, Freddo! So you actually witnessed this going down? What did you think? How long did it take you / people around you to figure out what had happened? Must have been L-O-U-D.

My family put on our own little fireworks show for Canada Day, but I was careful to only light ONE AT A TIME. Next year, though… [Note to self: get more buckets of sand and more bbq lighters]

      1. Years ago the families on our street would pool our money to buy a bunch of fireworks for the kids. We would bring out chairs and blankets(when necessary) and sit at the end of the street. The husbands would be the ones running the fireworks display. One year, the wheelbarrow that was holding the fireworks was too close to the action of the lit up fireworks. One of the firworks splattered over the unlit ones and lit them all up. They started shooting horizontally into the crowd of women and children. Luckily no one was hurt but it sure made for a good story over the years!

        1. That sounds a bit like what happened this year with me. Hubby and one of his buddies always goes get the good fireworks and puts on a great show for us. This year some of them fell over after they were lit and came straight for us. Came close, but everyone was ok.

    3. you should see the fireworks on bastille day in paris. think of those fifteen seconds lasting a half hour .

  7. This is one of my favorite entries. I’m not exactly sure why, I just love it!

  8. These are one of my favourite “things” in the whole world, the cookie cutter set! They hold fine memories of my grannies soft, chewy not too spicy Gingerbread. My birth mom made them nearly every special occasion! I do the same! It’s an awesome memory making event and so much fun when shared with children, family and friends! Another inet site says there are 10 in a full set and there’s an industry nearby who could re-make them from the cast. I think I’m missing Happy Easter and Happy Valentine’s. If anyone knows this is true, has them and is willing to sell, PLEASE let me know!

  9. When I see this vintage tupperware, all I can think of is that peculiar smell that comes along with it. Ahhh the memories

  10. I just got back from Europe , and I was in Paris , France for Bastille Day. the firework theme was disco. four letters . Y. M . C . A . IT WAS INSANE !!!!!!!!!!

  11. I totally dig this idea, but . . . who writes the first letters you guys or us? (above says, you guys, but the email I got just said we write them.) What is the subject matter? Can we write about anything? I can imagine this is a lot cheaper than therapy or medication for some individuals. Can we include pictures of our cats? How about recipes for vegan cupcakes? There is usually a chance I could possibly have interesting things to write about. What is the statistical probability that the reader will treatment? Great idea! You are all amazing. Please advise.

  12. Id have to check with you here. Which is not something I normally do! I get pleasure from reading a post that can make folks think. Also, thanks for allowing me to comment!

  13. Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how one can deliver an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more in style because you definitely have the gift.
