#948 The Man Couch

Watch that purse!

The Man Couch is any couch conveniently located near the changerooms in a women’s clothing store.

You can tell which one’s The Man Couch, because it’s generally covered in man. Most are either text-messaging, napping illegally, or staring straight ahead, jaws dropped, pupils dilated, and completely zoned out, their arms full of purses and plastic bags from other stores.

Now, The Man Couch really is good for everybody:

For women, it gives them a convenient place to find their male shopping companion. There they are, right outside the change room! This is much better than having to track them down in the magazine section of Borders or in the EB Games by the food court, for instance. Also, it’s great knowing your purse is safe and there’s an opinion available if you want it.

For guys, The Man Couch is a place of solace and comfort. Its giving cushions provide a quiet reprieve from the unrelenting Day Of Shopping. Surrounding guys are fellow travelers, their worn-weary eyes telling cautionary tales of Seven-Sweater Fashion Shows and Lineups For Hemming. Yeah, it’s a tired, quiet gang sitting there in the couch hostel at the back of the store.

So thank you, The Man Couch. Without you our calves would be burning even more, our boyfriends would be over at the record store, and we’d all be sitting on the floor.

The Man Couch, ladies and gentlemen!

AWESOME!

Chilling on The Man Couch

Hey everyone,

Gretchen Rubin is a longtime friend and fan of 1000 Awesome Things and I’m excited to announce that she has an awesome new book out this week! It’s called Happier at Home and is a follow-up to her mega-bestselling book The Happiness Project which has been tag-team partner of The Book of Awesome on the bestseller lists for the past couple years.

To celebrate we’re giving away five copies of Happier at Home! Let’s pick a winner from the comments each day this week. All you have to do to enter is leave a comment with one thing you do in your life that makes you happier. There’s no limit to entries! Just make sure you’ve got the correct email address so we can contact you if you win…

Good luck!

Neil

  1. I give those I interact with a big, ear to ear, goofy smile often with hand actions. Getting a smile out of someone and brightening their day makes me happy!

  2. Swing dancing makes me happy. I love the connection to other dancers and the community of people who share a strange passion the rest of the world has forgotten.

  3. To keep myself sane, I alternate computer tasks and moving around tasks when I’m working at home. Complete a lesson plan, wash dishes, make a worksheet, make the bed, etc.
I can *almost* trick myself into thinking of doing chores as taking a break. It keeps me from burning out on one thing and devoting the evening to video games and guilt!

  4. Getting a pedicure makes me happy. I just spent three days at the lake, and now my feet are gnarly. I would love to get a pedicure today…maybe this weekend.

  5. I’ve never seen one of these. I need to get out more. Anyway, congratulations Gretchen Rubin on your new book! It’s looks very awesome, indeed.

  6. One thing that makes me happy in life is sitting on a swing with a close friend ,sipping tea and having random conversations about everything in life.

  7. Hey! I have much stress crumbling me away at the mo, I read the story about the man couch and it set me off straight away, absolutely spot on! I love it and I wanna read more :)

  8. And to make myself happier each day I launch myself into the air on skewiff angles on a bmx and do awesome tricks, Job done!

  9. One thing that makes me happier is running around the quad at my school playing frisbee but really having no idea what I’m doing.

    Cheers!

  10. Seeing the light bulb go on when a student begins to understand a difficult math concept. Makes everything seem worthwhile to me and a much happier day as well.

  11. What makes me happy are the moments before bedtime with each of my kids, the snuggles, the kisses and talking about their days.

  12. A phone call from my son on his way to work each morning. A phone call from my daughter on her way home each night. Even though they are both grown and live far away,it makes me happy keep the connection close. Funny that even as babies, she was a night owl and he an early bird. Smiling………everyday AWESOME!

  13. A cup of tea with a good book is a happy moment for me. And now that we are heading into fall, smelling a wood burning fireplace is definitely something that makes me smile!

  14. I came across an even better alternative in Chester, England this year. Its called a “Husband Creche”. There was a signboard outside a pub called the Rectory that read: “Leave him with us. You go shopping in peace. Return to Rectory for refreshments. He carries bags home. WIN WIN PS. You MUST return!”

My husband loved it, of course!!

  15. Just thought of my first 1000 Awesome thing…. when a car inches forward in the right hand lane to let you turn at a a red light!
(Did I get that off of this website? I hope not!)

      1. hahaha! I thought I was being creative… just my luck, all my awesome thoughts revolve around this website!

  16. Can’t believe I’ve been missing this contest. I need to stay connected. Things have just been really busy. Anyway… I’m not really much of a shopper and when I do go for clothes and stuff like that, I go by myself. If I go somewhere like Walmart with hubby, I’m the one that needs the couch!
For this post… spending time with hubby makes me happy, even when he does shop all crazy like a girl.

  17. When I was a kid, my best friend lived with her dad who was the custodial parent in her family. Her house always felt like a “man” house–complete with big, comfortable, leather couch. I remember how great the naps were on that couch. You got it just right!

Reading 1000 Awesome Things is something that makes me happy, and I never “delete” one without reading it, even when my Inbox is crazy and I’m sooo sleepy.

  18. As I 45 year old man, I put on my roller skates when the roads are silent first thing in the morning. Then I just skate, listening to the silence and enjoying the sliding feel of freedom When I am ready, I will put on my headphones and listed to the Michael Jackson ‘Off the Wall’ album, or something similar. It is an awesome way to start the day.

  19. You could definitely see your enthusiasm in the paintings you write. The arena hopes for more passionate writers such as you who aren’t afraid to say how they believe. Always follow your heart. “The most profound joy has more of gravity than of gaiety in it.” by Michel de Montaigne.
