#947 Neighbors with pools

Just hop the fence

Hey there, neighbor. Thanks a lot for paying for that massive, expensive pool! Great job installing it, heating it, chlorinating it, vacuuming it, and skimming it. You sure it’s cool if I take you up on that offer to swing by for a quick dip?

AWESOME!

Hey everyone,

This week’s contests are going great! So far Syd and Leanne Tuck have taken home books. There are still three books to give away!

For those just joininging, Gretchen Rubin is a longtime friend and fan of 1000 Awesome Things and I’m excited to announce that she has an awesome new book out this week! It’s called Happier at Home and is a follow-up to her mega-bestselling book The Happiness Project which has been tag-team partner of The Book of Awesome on the bestseller lists for the past couple years.

To celebrate we’re giving away five copies of Happier at Home! We’re picking a winner from the comments each day. All you have to do to enter is leave a comment with one thing you do in your life that makes you happier. There’s no limit to entries! Just make sure you’ve got the correct email address so we can contact you if you win…

Good luck!

Neil

  1. sitting on a couch next to my partner reading a good book, and sometimes exchanging ideas from our respective books. awesomely happy-making

  2. Happiness is inter-generational family day at a Water slide park! The river runs with tubes, when the whole lot of you can go down together, flip, flop, spin, bump, drop…kersplash! Laugh hysterically, come out all dishevelled, yet still on top and all together!

  3. I have recently rediscovered enthusiasm. Instead of waiting for enthusiasm to find me, I have taken it upon myself to just become the enthusiastic, cheerful person I want to be. It’s weird, but by doing this it seems to open a pathway in my brain that encourages me to think in terms of making ordinary, daily things more fun. Attitude, as it turns out, is everything after all.

  4. What makes me happy? Having my cat sticking her wet nose in my ear in the morning telling me it’s time for me to get up and seize the chance to have ANOTHER super awesome day!!!

  5. Going home after a long day’s work and making a “star” on the bed but with rumpled sheets and blankets instead of snow… and not tidying up afterwards!! Heaven!

  6. Having dinner in my favourite restaurant and the waiter surprises me with a complimentary dessert for being the best customer of the day. “Best customer of the day”??? For sure?? Who cares?! It’s free!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. The cashier surprising me that I get to buy my favourite chocolate at a discount because I have passed the purchase limit.

  10. When the water finally heats up while taking a shower on a cold winter’s day. Brrrrrrrrrr….

  11. Thinking I have reached the dateline and realize that I still have more time to spare!!

  14. Watching the season finale of my favourite series and not be disappointed for a change. :))

  15. I’m trying to take things more easily and not stressing out so much; makes me feel happier and the people around me too :)

  16. I’ve never had a neighbour with a pool. But that would be fantastic…

Though come to think of it, having my own pool would be rather AWESOME too.

As for something I do that makes me happier: throwing all the books aside and surfing the web to take a break from studying. (:

    1. internet sometimes makes me smile. Blogs like this one or funny sites, but then I get to the news and it makes me sad again. I need to stay away from the news.

  17. Keeping in touch with my octogenarian relatives and former neighbors always makes me happy. I love their perspectives, and feel good knowing that I’m bringing something to them, too: the comfort of being remembered and valued.

  18. We adopted a pregnant cat, and have welcomed her and her four kittens into our family. They have brought a lot of happiness to our home, and, despite all the chaos right now, we’re so glad we made room for them.

  19. Reading books by favorite authors makes me happy. I always splurge on a Louise Penny mystery, a novel by Stephen L. Carter, anything by Ellen Gilchrist. I thought Gretchen’s first book was great and am looking forward to her newest. Winning a copy would make me especially happy. :)

  20. Looking at art online and comparing my favorites with the pieces that catch my sweetheart’s eye. Fun to learn something new about him after all these years.

  21. With the election approaching, I’ve been making calls in support of my candidate. Doing something about an issue that matters so much to me makes me very happy.

  22. Turning on the car to find that one of your favorite songs has just started on the radio, especially after a stressful day at work. :D

  23. The 1 Thing I do everyday that makes me Happier is writing a Bedtime story for my 5 and 4 year old. It’s a way that I take the 3 characters from the nightly narrative adventures and include my children’s interests, fears and developments into a world of Fantasy and wonder. I’m a Child Psychologist by trade but a dad first, however I’m a deployed Uniformed Service Officer attached to the US Army in Korea right now. I’ve been telling them these stories since they were 2 and 3, so now I write them send them to my wife and she “reads” them a bed time story from me. Now, I have over 50 stories since I’ve been away and may make a little blog or storybook out of them when I get home to Hawaii after this assignment. Thanks, you’ve inspired me.

    1. Wow, what a most wondrous gift you’ve given your children! Memories for a lifetime and stories they may one day share with their own children, your grandchildren. How amazing! Thanks for serving, Ed!

  24. I’ve been keeping a “Why Today was Awesome” journal for more than a year and a half. It helps me recall the good stuff and when I look back on past entries, I see that my life has been filled with awesome stuff.

  25. While sitting in my office chair about to nod off I will have to say that sleeping in is something that makes me happy.

  26. Reading a chapter of a novel to my kids before bed each night. And for them all to be excited about what happens next tomorrow.

  27. Having a special someone who knows the same poem as you and who can say every other line with you. My son and I recite “I found a silver dollar” by Dennis Lee together each night.
