#837 Pushing those little buttons on the soft drink cup lid

Cola, Diet, RB, or other.

When we were kids, my sister and I carefully pushed those little plastic buttons every time we scored a meal at McDonald’s. We pushed Cola if we had cola, RB if we had root beer, and Other if we were sucking back some McDonald’s orange drink, which was our usual.

Survey says

Honestly, we thought there was a big Garbage Survey at the end of the day and every customer had to punch their button to send in feedback. We figured some poor McDonald’s employee stuck his arm shoulder-deep in that bag of lettuce scraps drenched in Big Mac sauce, assorted ice-cream cone bottoms, and greasy French Fry containers to pull out all the cup lids. Then we imagined he arranged them in tipsy, drippy piles and counted up how many of each sold that day, quickly tabulating the results on a clipboard and calling them into head office so they knew how many batches to make for tomorrow.

Kids, huh?

Anyway, these days every time I enjoy a fine dine at a fast food joint, I still make sure I take lots of napkins, swivel in my chair, and press those little buttons on the drink cup lid.

There’s just something about the way they give, the way they turn white, and the way they’re permanently transformed for all eternity that just makes me itch for it.

It’s just compulsive. It’s just instinct.

It’s just

AWESOME!

  1. I have always enjoyed punching the buttons. I always push in all of them. My daughter always makes sure that she pushes the right one in and gets upset when I reach over and push the rest of them in.

    1. First, you have to push in the corresponding button to your drink, but after that and only after that, you may push in all the rest! Soft drink lidetiquette according to me! :)

      1. Your posts are incredible!!!!!! First, the subject matter is always fantabulous. Second, your writing skills are beyond amazing. I hope you continue to find creative outlets for you beautifully evolved writing skills. Love it!

        1. I’m sure you’re talking about Neil…. if you love this blog as much as we do, you should really check out his books. They are just like this blog. Google “Book of Awesome” or even “Neil Pasricha books” and go from there. He has 3 books, a journal and a calendar.

  2. Love doing that. When I was a kid I thought you were supposed to push one of the buttons BEFORE you got the actual drink, as a way of telling the cashier which drink you wanted. Of course, this was confusing to me as the drink would already be in the cup by the time I even had a chance to push the buttons. Oh, childhood.

  3. I never pushed the right button — I pushed them all!

And then one day I realised I could lift the lid up, pop the buttons back out, and push them again. “Holy mother of God…”

  4. I didn’t even find these things until very recently. I pushed it just to see what would happen, and I was amazed! So I pushed down all of them. I didn’t go into fast food restaurants that much when I was a kid, and I still don’t go into them much. We always go into one when we’re on a road trip, though.

      1. Yeah! I can get some fries or something, and practice my ninja skills at the same time! I think that would probably make my day. Eating, and being a ninja. Two of my favourite things.

        1. LOL!! Whenever I ‘sneak’ up on someone at work and it startles them I like to say, “I’m a ninja” They just look at me like I’m crazy. They don’t get it.

  5. Hey, I just thought of a fun party to have…a bubble wrap & soft drink lid party! Have bubble wrap and lids for all the guests! LOL! Tell me that wouldn’t be fun!

    1. Have bubble wrapped walls and floors and then soft drink lids just randomly laying around! Should we merge this party with the Nutella and goodie bag party that we were going to have last year?

  6. I still feel the desperate NEED to push all those buttons. I do it on other people’s drinks too if they’re too slow.

  7. When I was younger, sometimes after I pushed all of the buttons, I took off the lid and tried to push them up. XD Let’s just say it always ended up me having a condinsated mess on my youngster hand.
