#785 Falling asleep in the backseat of a car late at night on the drive home

Moonlit skies, stained plush seats, and a quietly revving engine combine to form a perfectly cozy late night bed on the long drive home.

Whether you’re a baby in a carseat, a teen getting a lift from the party, or Grandma cabbing home from Bingo, there’s nothing like drifting into dreamland in that rusty Volvo on the slow and swervy country back roads.

Yes, those tires rumble over empty lanes as headlights pop up over hilltops, warm your eyelids, then whoosh past, leaving the entire car dark except for the faint glow from the distant dashboard clock.

And if you’re little and you’re lucky, you might even score the Bonus Version Super-Finish at the end of the trip, which includes pre-wearing pajamas under your winter coat and getting carried up to your bed by mom or dad after pulling into the driveway.

Now that’s service.

AWESOME!

The dream

  1. I haven’t done this since I was a kid. Oh, the simplier times!
The only time I fall asleep in a car now is when I’m out Black Friday shopping. I don’t really sleep, its more of a half sleep because I’m still talking to my friend to help keep her awake, but I’m sleeping.

  2. I was just thinking of this the other day, how awesome it was falling asleep 10 minutes into our 2 hour drive and waking up as we pulled in the drive way. I thought, that would be a good one for The Book of Awesome. So also awesome? When 1000 Awesome Things reads your mind ;)

  3. I like to try and stay awake when I’m in the backseat, because I like to look out at the scenery. I guess there isn’t much to see at night though.

  4. Its been ages since i have snoozed in the car, I am normally either driving or the extra pair of eyes on the road, I think its described as a back seat driver lol.
I do remember when the boys where little, Into the car seats they would go and just a few minutes into the ride they would be out like lights, sheer bliss.

  5. I haven’t done this in years! Usually I’m the one driving the car, and it’s not quite as awesome when you fall asleep in the driver’s seat. :P

    1. I have unfortunately done this… but only for a second! After that, the windows roll down and the radio goes up to help keep my eyes open.
