Okay, straight up: you know those big kettle drums you see in the symphony? The ones being pounded with padded drumsticks by a bald guy in a tuxedo? Well, the sound of rain from inside the tent feels like living in a kettle drum.
Now, let’s be honest. The best thing about the sound of rain inside the tent is that it means you’re inside the tent, not outside in a thick and wet T-shirt, on your mud-splattered hands and knees, trying to hammer some plastic stakes into the mushy ground. Yes, putting up a tent in the rain is pretty high up there on 1000 Annoying Things, a non-existent netherlist which also features #1000 Walking into spider webs and #999 When someone says the punchline to the joke you’re telling.
The sound of rain from inside the tent feels safe, secure, and sort of comforting. After all, you’re out in the elements, safe from the elements. You’ll get the marshmallow roasting sticks later, you’ll build a fire tomorrow, but for now it’s just time to lay back on the bumpy sleeping bag, put your hands behind your head, and smile.
AWESOME!
Hey, the list of Annoying things! I was wondering when it popped up.
As for the sound of rain from inside a tent… *shudders*
I hate camping, and my only experience with this was from a Year 8 camping trip, for which I and three other girls squished into an old, dirty tent, and when it started to rain (which continued for the entire trip) we discovered that IT FREAKING LEAKED.
Good times. Good times. ;)
Rain from inside a tent – yes, it’s awesome!!
But I also think pouring rain outside is lovely when you’re safe and warm at home or in bed!
Ohhh, this is a good one. Yes, a great sound. That without this post I likely wouldn’t have thought of it or remembered it on my own is one of the things I love best about this website. :)
And doesn’t that make it just that much more awesome?!
Rain on the outside of the tent? Brings back comforting and peaceful memories!
..ah- you DO have that 1000 Annoying things list, don’t you?! Love your awesome shares. Thanks for the daily bright spots you slip into my day.
Namaste,
Patty
never went camping.
You’re totally missing out!
I love, love, love the rain. I love the smell of rain and the sound of rain, especially the sound from under a tent or umbrella. Rain just makes me the happiest person on earth, I have no idea why. I lived on the east coast of Canada for some of my childhood, where it rains a lot, so that might be why. I think rain is probably one of my favourite things in the world. Anyway, I haven’t gone camping in forever! I should go camping sometime. Or maybe on a rainy day I can just set up a tent in my backyard.
Even if I didn’t know you, I’d know you’re awesome just from you response today! Anyone that enamored of rainy weather is a pretty awesome person!

I just had to laugh. This made me think of our experiences at Imagine (A Christian youth camp) Rain every night, streams flowing through our tents. That much that some resorted to sleeping in the car. I just love camping!:D
I’d forgotten how lovely that sound is. Thanks for the reminder!
instantly I was back inside a tent somewhere giggled… oh ya what an awesome thing for sure
I LOOOOVVVVE the rain! I grew up in Vancouver and some in the rain forests of Lynn Canyon…oh the life force and sounds of music it gives and YES, the memories from within a tent, some of the best ever lived! I love the smell before, during and after the rain!
In my angel daily relection book it says when we dance in the rain, we have communion with the angels, divine life force and never lose our childhood ways! It is a must that my love must love the rain…next time!

I agree. The sound of rain on a tent is one of the most relaxing things in the world. Not only does it sound good, it’s the perfect excuse to do absolutely nothing! Except grab the snacks and a beer.
I haven’t been camping in a tent in a while, but I do love that sound. Its only been a few years, but I think its high time to go camping again. I haven’t been since I was last pregnant and I think he’s the right age now to take out and enjoy sleeping outside.
