#903 Picking scabs

It's so bad it's good

There’s just something so tempting about picking your scabs.

Maybe it’s because they sort of brown, harden, and crisp up, and end up looking like small, bumpy countries on the side of a topographical map. You just can’t help but play God, cracking up the coastline, slowly twisting the island around, or just ripping the whole thing off in one painful shot.

I mean sure, it might sting a bit. But check out that brand new skin underneath. All flaky and pink, ready and waiting for whatever this great big world has to offer. Even if it offers another round of rollerskating without kneepads on a gravel driveway.

Yes, picking scabs is a sweet guilty release — like twisting your tongue into your loose baby teeth, popping big zits in the center of your cheeks, or dropping hot farts underneath the sheets.

AWESOME!

hey, i have that globe at the end of the article. I think it still says USSR on it.

  3. how true! but now i wish i never picked my scabs when i was kid because they left marks. :-(

  4. Every time I think of the urge to pick scabs (guilty as hell!), I think of that footage we’ve all seen of monkeys grooming each other and picking bits of dried skin out of each other’s fur.

I think that’s why we do it.

And if you’re not meant to pick scabs, then how come they itch? :P

  5. katcarneo, scabs leave scars whether you rip them or let them fall.

I have tons of scars from picking scabs, but I still do it. It’s worth it! Well mostly. I did rip some stitches out after a surgery and that didn’t turn out pretty at all.

Mosquito bite scabs are the best.

  18. Caroline

It’s amazing when you pick a scab when it’s ripe. It comes off easy without leaving any pockmarks or red skin.

I love to pick scabs, too! My bf likes to peel my skin when I get a sunburn. He especially likes when he gets it to come off in a big sheet of skin. It feels good, too.

I love, love, love your blog, Neil. Thank you!

EWWWWWW! Picking scabs are totally nasty and gross as a kid I would just leave em’ be even if they were irritating because that is just gross.

  26. AwesomeNinja

Picking scabs…ouch. But yes, satisfying. I used to yank out my loose teeth…by myself, while reading in bed. Weird, eh? But I don’t have many scabs anymore…because I’m an awesome ninja. ;)

  38. Howdy! This is my first visit to your blog! We are a collection of volunteers and starting a new project in a community in the same niche. Your blog provided us valuable information to work on. You have done a marvellous job!

  39. I know exactly what you mean. I had a particularly nasty scrape on my knee when young and it took 3 times as long to heal because I kept picking at it.

  40. PEOPLE

Check out iScab. Years of socialization lead us to pick our scabs in private shame and hide our cherished scab jars from friends and loved ones (What?! You DO have a scab jar don’t you?). Today, with the marvels or technology we can once again pick our scabs with pride. We can fill our scab jars to the brim. And we can do it wherever we are, whenever we want. Scab picking has entered the 21st century!
