#858 The other side of the pillow

when-you-cant-get-to-sleepHave you ever found yourself laying in bed wide awake in the middle of the night?

You know how it is: the clock’s clicking past 1:30 AM and you lay there wide awake, eyes bugged open, chewing your upper lip, tapping the sheets with your fingers, completely frustrated. Your pupils have long adjusted to the dark, so your eyes are darting around the room over and over, trying to identify dark shapes or watching the moonlight shadowdance around the walls. Maybe your thoughts won’t settle down, or you just can’t get comfortable, or you ate spicy food before bed, or you have a presentation the next morning, or maybe it’s just the frustration itself keeping you in a terrible, neverending cycle of sleeplessness.

Take two and call me at 4am

So you play dead and try to remain motionless as long as possible. You change positions back and forth, side to side, left to right. You get up and go to the bathroom or start reading a book. Maybe you try and remake the bed, since by now you’ve probably managed to twist your sheets and blankets into a completely unusable, tightly wound pile barely covering your legs.

On nights like this, where you just can’t sleep, one of the greatest things invented is simply Turning Over The Pillow. Yes, flipping over your pillow and checking out the other side takes Bed Comfort up a few notches and is a simple and easy way to help you relax and get more comfortable.

The other side of the pillow, folks. Because it’s flat when you’re sagging, fresh when you’re stale, and cold when you’re hot, baby.

AWESOME!

Looks good, don't it?

  1. What about the oft-overlooked but equally important other side of the comforter? I feel it, too, provides comfort to a body that is in need.

  2. This was so totally me last night. i couldn’t get to sleep for anything! i finally ended up dozing off on the couch after not being able to get comfortable at all in my bed.

  3. I so do this all the time, and have no idea why, but it seems to do the trick. No sooner have I turned my pillow over, I seem to sail off to the land of Nod :)

  4. Equally as awesome is that pillow flip is frequently a fix for a child’s nightmare. Tell them they just need to flip their pillow over to the good dream side. The simple act and the coolness of the pillow will reset their little brains enough that they can get right back to sleep and avoid the scary whatever it was. This is by far the single most useful parenting tip I ever received.

  5. I love a cold pillow! Though I have to confess.. when its the middle of the night, and I still cant sleep even after I turned my own pillow over.. I reach over and stick my hand under HIS pillow..ahhh!! now thats refreshing :) lol

  6. when i was a kid, sometimes i would get scared and climb in bed with my parents, and there was nothing more comforting then waking my mom up and telling her to flip her pillow. i still havent been able to find a pillow that has a side as cool as mom’s was.

  7. I’ve just recently stumbled upon this site so naturally I now have to look through each entry. Just as I was thinking of the cooler side of the pillow, this one showed up. Oh, sweet pillow, what would I do without you?

  8. Was just listening to Uncle Kracker’s song “Smile” and one of the things he says she is is “cooler than the flip side of my pillow”. Just had to come and add that here – so cool that it’s in a song, even if he didn’t get it from you.

Congrats on the book, Neil! Can’t wait to see it.

    1. LOL, I just noticed that (and posted about it here) today. Should’ve reviewed the comments first I guess. :)

  9. This is a group on Facebook! its called ‘flipping your pillow to get the cold side’ or something like that. Personally, i dont flip the pillow over because i like to sleep on the same side so it doesnt dirty both sides (i dunno, thats just me), but when im trying to get comfortable i always stick my hand under the corner of my pillow and its always cool and cosy under there =D

  10. My mum taught me the awesome thing that is sleeping upside-down in bed when you can’t get to sleep. It really really works. Awesome.

  11. I just noticed today that in the song “Smile” by Uncle Kracker, he mentions the other side of the pillow too: “Cooler than the flip side of my pillow.” AWESOME!

  12. It was like once I slept in a warm sweat shirt just to make sure that I don’t feel cold and I don’t know how it suddenly became so hot in there and I removed the sweat shirt but there was sweat on my pillow and it was irritating so I just turned the pillow and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
