#850 Absolute perfect silence

Nothing.

No rain.

No birds.

No wind.

No waves.

No buzzing.

No beeping.

No blinking.

No haze.

When there’s no office hum.

And no kitchen clatter.

When there are no idling cars.

And no distant chatter.

When there’s absolute, perfect silence and really nothing else.

When your ears strain for sound, and just meet silence itself.

Well, that beautiful rare moment is so sweet.

And so perfectly

AWESOME!

  1. Thanks PICDIT! I thought that something was going to load, but then I thought he was trying to get his message across by putting nothing. It wasn’t until I read the comments that I realized that you have to highlight the post to see it.

    1. Before I even clicked on the title (I’ve been reading these all at once, and backwards actually- starting at somewhere in the 300s by accident) I had a feeling it was going to be blank, but after reading the comments I discovered the highlighting trick. Awesome use of computer stuff like white font color!

  2. Great post!
Last night I just saw the episode of The Simpsons when Homer and Lisa do a session in the sensory deprivation tank. First you see Lisa desperately trying to turn off her inner chatter. Homer simply remarks: BORING!

I also enjoy the artificial silence you get with ear plugs. One minute: loud snoring / party in the next room / bagpipes. Next minute: merciful silence. Awesome.

  3. I also was dependent on the comments to realize that you had to highlight something. I thought it was just blank.

Great post – read like a poem.

    Two enthusiastic thumbs up.

    1. Gotta agree with you there. Only ever “heard” real silence once. That was on top of a glacier in the middle of the night at -30°C.

  4. Stupid. I don’t know anybody who particularly likes silence. It’s more eerie than anything.

  5. This is the kind of silence we feel when my husband and I are sitting by the side of a perfectly calm lake on a perfectly peaceful summer afternoon. Just him and me (and the dog) and this heavenly silence. We call it the “ahhhhh feeling” where you let every thought go and just sink into nature. I love it, love it, love it.

  6. I am SO looking forward to #850! Thank you for this. On a completely unrelated “thing”, last night, my daughter who is a new mother, called and said…”It’s hard isn’t it, to leave your baby and go back to work…I understand what you went through.” Empathy from your child….Awesome!

  7. this is why i sneak into the backyard for a smoke in the middle of the night… nothin else like it… especially when its good and foggy…

  8. After coming home from a long day at the office hearing tons of noises, loud or quiet, it feels ggood to come home, sit down on my laptop with complete silence…

  9. Wonderful.

When I get out on the street, walking towards my car of where ever I’m are heading. And all of a sudden, a stand still, what am I missing. It is total silence, no cars, no people talking. I really stand still until the silence is broken. I love it.

  10. We live out in the woods, and a few times I have been out in the middle of the night and heard nothing. Perfect silence. No traffic (we are a ways back from the road, but not even noise from a distant road was heard. Every few minutes I could hear a slight ‘click, click, click’ way off in the distance. I finally identified it as a leaf falling out in the woods, bouncing off of branches as it fell. Absolutely quiet. Absolutely awesome!

  11. Jah! Noh! That’s perfect silence. It’s awesome stuff!! It reminded me of a stillness that’s peacful and in harmony with nature

  13. I loved seeing this entry in the actual book. You can’t highlight a book to make text appear of course, so it really was just two pages of nothingness. And that was just

    AWESOME!

  15. We live up in the mountains…so you’d think, eh????
We’ve got some very rare birds, roosters, donkey’s, horse; wild-life and some wild neighbors too.
Just over one of the bluffs is a rifle range and a small airport.
The only time I “hear this” is when it is snowing outside and I’m walking through the nature trails and even then…”Silence is golden…golden!”
    Brilliant post and comments.
