I know this scenario all to well. Someone goes in for their pack of gum and you ask if you can have a piece. They say sure, but when they pull the package out and there is one lone piece left… the silence is deafening. I always look at the person and say “Oh no – it’s your last piece. Don’t worry about it.”, because I know the value behind that lone ranger. But when they insist that you just take it, or when they suggest splitting the piece in two so you can both enjoy it, you know that you and that person now have a special bond.
Definitely awesome.
Andrea, that’s hilarious. Have you ever tried to split one of the chicklet style pieces, though? It’s either trying to fold it in half through the hard white shell or somebody has to bite it off.
Nothing says, “I want you to be happier than me” than this.
A stranger sat down next to me on the bus and he had really bad breath; he resisted the offer to take my last piece of gum even though I insisted. Since then, my rule has been: Always accept gum when offered, especially when it’s the last piece.
Always accept gum! It could be a hint.

When you put on dry clothes after swimming for a long time. Mmmmmmmm.
While at a flea market with my daughter just 2 years old, a booth owner stopped and offered to cut a wad of gum out of the top of my head of hair, my daughter had plunked there while taking a ride on my shoulders…now that’s sharing! “Whoa, whoa, sweet child of mine!”
