#736 The smell of Play-Doh

Salty, sweet and a little bit oilySniff up some fumes and get ready for a brain cell party.

Yes, those sleeping memories from long ago will wake up and bounce and crash around your head as you close your eyes and let that salty-sweetness take you back to Kindergarten.

Pop open the memoriesFade to black and remember slightly greasy hands with bits in the fingernails, remember mixing all the colors together until they turned purple-brown, remember rolling out lots of cold lopsided worms, and remember the taste-test incident that resulted in a mouth full of salty chalk.

People, now there’s even a cologne to capture that smell for the ladies, so feel free to get your nostalgia on strong and spray down, my friends.

Yes, that smell of Play Doh takes us way back to the old school. If you’re sniffing up what we’re putting down, then you’re an old fool, who’s so cool. If you wanna get back, let us show you the way.

Whoomp, there it is.

Lemme hear you say.

AWESOME!

    1. I must be the only person in the world that has hated the smell of play doh ever since I smelt it a a child :(

  1. #735: The taste of Play-Doh. Don’t tell me I’m not the only one who did that.

Fresh Play-Doh out of the can is the way to go. And I KNEW you couldn’t leave out the cologne.

    1. “Fun to play with, but not to eat.”

Why do they make something taste so good if they don’t want you to eat it?

  2. yeah, even though we were only allowed to have play-dough once or twice in my childhood (it was so messy, and we liked to dig it into the carpet)….it is one of those things that will remain in my mind forever…totally AWESOME!

  3. I work in a preschool and am thus lucky enough to smell this fantastic smell on a daily basis. The best though… is the very first time a can is opened. Nothing beats that.

  4. Try making your own play-doh, koolaid mix, flour, salt and a little water……..edible!

    1. Can you throw it in the oven and make some Play-Doh bread? Keep in mind I don’t know how to cook when answering.

      1. Better late than never; even if I’m not PMedGuy;lol…
No cooking required and add a teaspoon of alum to make it more pliable and extend its life!

  5. I think I remember disliking the smell of Play-doh, but I bet a whole flood of nostalgia would come back to me if I gave it a whiff. Smells do that better than anything else.

  6. So AWESOME!
But alas, they’ve changed the wonderful taste into something… less desirable. I remember taking a nibble or two when I was younger, and recently just got my hands on a new can. Same smell, not so same taste :[

  7. That’s truee! it’s so good to smell play doh. Lol how can you remember this stuff?! thank you for sharing! i almost can smell it now :D

  8. Fantatsic site! I’m looking to compile a list of some of the best slasher movies on the web. Will be back to review more information on your blog. Keep up the great work! Thanks

  9. I love the smell too. It brought back old memories and also “silly putty”. Similar smell. Can anyone remember? You could mould it, bounce it & get prints from newspaper by rolling it over.

  10. Gosh, I thought I was the only one who felt that way! My friends all think I’m crazy for loving the smell of Play-Doh… Pssh to them.

  11. Yes! And I super duper loved licking it. not eating it. Just licking :)

  12. I want to eat the smell of Play-Doh. I don’t want to eat the Play-Doh itself, just the smell of it. Does that make sense?

  13. I love play dow I play with it Ll the time… Hate the smell tho and it always goes hard

  14. You know what’s even more awesome… the guy who invented this stuff was a hardware guy who used this white putty to clean-up the soot left on wallpaper from gas radiators. When heating units changed, his sister-in-law, who was a kindergarten teacher, brought some in and her students played for hours. Her one suggestion was to add color. And they did. It’s awesome that Play-Doh didn’t stay in someone’s toolbox, rotting away.
