#486 Getting through right away when you call a big company

Thank you for calling.

We are experiencing lower than normal call volumes.

AWESOME!

“I got a call from my husband while I was at work that The Book of Awesome had finally arrived! I got the book the same day I found out I was pregnant! While I was sitting there waiting for the test, I flipped through the book and found a lot of my favorite awesome things. What could be more awesome than that? Baby and The Book of Awesome all in the same day!” ~Bekah….the green square  :-)

  1. OMG IT’S BEKAH!!! :D

    Sweeeeeet!

And this awesome thing is amazing. A company that’s good about that is Scholastic. Thank you, Scholastic. I love you forever and ever for always letting me talk to an operator in a speedy manner.

      1. I didn’t notice it when I sent the pic in, but my face looks swollen. hahahahaha. Probably with all the crying I was doing right before I took the pic.

    1. YAY BEKAH!!

Sorry I’ve been so dilatory in responding to this.. super exciting on all fronts – book and baby! :)

    1. I tried writing an email once. I waited an hour for a response, got tired of waiting so I called. Two weeks later, I got my email response. Never again.

  2. This happened to me the other day with the FBI. The freakin’ FBI. And they were incredibly nice.

  3. The rep and I always have a laugh whenever this happens because I always think the person who answered is a recording and I just sit there silently waiting for instructions. Also, I’m almost always scared when someone says “Hello.” after waiting to be next in line because I always seem to forget I’m even on the phone.

  4. It’s still a little sad when, even though you get connected right away, you still need to trudge through the tiers of tech support.

In other instances, though, it can be really nice! Great idea.

  5. wow…..its me!!

I have had so many problems lately being put on hold trying to get insurance. The voice that comes over the line every ten seconds tells me I’m the first caller in the queue, but I’m still on hold for half an hour. What is the hold up???? They could at least have better music.

    1. Ha ha, for a long time, the company I worked for had a Supertramp album for the hold music. Recently we “upgraded” to Kenny G!

      1. Hahaha! “Upgrade”

The hospital where my dad works has played instrumental Bee Gees songs for the last year or two. So bizarre. Later in the day when a wordless version of “Night Fever” floats through my brain, I’m like, “What? Oh yeah, I called Dad today.”

        1. This place I’ve been calling…their music isn’t really music. It sounds like someone is clapping their hands to the beat of something. Its really loud and that’s all it really is.
          **clap
          wait 2 seconds
          **clap
          wait 2 seconds
**your call is very important to us. You are the first caller in the queue. Someone will be with you shortly
          wait 2 seconds
          **clap

          1. I just wanted to say – congrats Bekah!! I remember all of your wonderful entries during the “your awesome thing here” contest, and anyone who is that creative and has such an appreciation for the positive side of life is bound to be one amazing parent!!!!!

    2. We just installed a new phone recording system at our company, and I love the way it works. We record from the ‘ring…ring’ through the automated attendant, listen as the caller navigates through our menu, gets transferred to the operator and finally gets put into the queue for Customer Service, the on-hold music, and FINALLY the call gets answered. I love it because now management, who reviews the calls for “quality assurance”, gets to hear what our customers have to listen to. I am hoping that changes will come.

      1. And presumably will hear all the curses the callers are muttering under their breath while on hold.

  6. As someone who has worked in call centers for about a decade, I have to say that if you are on hold for a long time, then the agent you are going to get is taking call after call after call without a chance for a breather. So, if you don’t get through right away, then you know they are busy, and when you finally talk to someone, be super nice and don’t talk about the wait. That way the agent will be so happy to have a good call that they will do anything for you.

  7. It is definitely awesome! Yesterday I was transferred five times. I was calling in the first place because I was double charged causing my bank account to overdraw. Still, I kept a smile on my face…It’s not their fault…

  8. This one is clearly apocryphal :)

With certain cellphone companies that shall remain nameless, but are headed by globetrotting bombastic bearded British billionaires—you are treated to various musical accompaniments to your life-passing-before-your-very-eyes wait, each worse than the next while being reminded by some chipper hipster that your call is important to them.

  9. The Book of Awesome is AWESOME! Haha, but really, it gave me a lot of laughs and it felt great that we can all share our moments of awesomeness to relate to everyone else’s. The book was like a thousand steps higher than joining awesome groups on facebook. (and you mention a lot of awesomeness about your feet, but it’s really true0 Thanks so much for sharing this book of awesome with us!! I love you Neil Pasricha!

  10. I’d love to get straight through – there’s nothing worse than waiting on hold especially if you’re calling to complain – all the waiting just makes you more and more mad!!!
