#372 Umbrella karma

Umbrella karma is when you lose your umbrella somewhere but then randomly find another one somewhere else.

Whoops, left your rainshade in the restaurant? No worries, there’s an extra one in your front closet from last week’s party. Shoot, did you leave yours at the back of the bus? Well don’t worry because there’s six of them in the corner of this coat rack.

Let your mind slip back and remember all the umbrellas you’ve left under movie seats and in taxi cabs over the years. Smile because you’re part of our great big Secret Shared Umbrella World and we’re all looking out for you. So don’t worry next time you forget your umbrella somewhere… because we’ve recorded your donation and we’ll leave another one out for you soon.

AWESOME!

  1. I like this! :D

I don’t forget my umbrella as much as I end up breaking it … either I buy really crappy umbrellas or I just stand wrong in the wind.

Anyway, the greatest Umbrella Karma I’ve ever experienced was when this guy on campus had a backpack full of umbrellas and ponchos and was handing them out to people walking around without one. It was so cool. This guy was awesome; he rode a unicycle to class and smiled CONSTANTLY.

    1. I wanna like this comment… I thought the exact same thing hahaha. It took a while to get posted!

  2. Umbrella karma does not exist in Singapore. There is always a shortage of umbrellas, especially when it rains. And it always rains. And if someone were to find an umbrella, the last thing they’d do is share it or give it away because moments later, they’d probably need it.

I love the comment about the umbrella movement by Katie above. I’m going to start that going here, too!

  3. This fits perfectly to yesterday. The rain was seriously pouring on my way home yesterday. I stopped at the day care to get my daughter and I couldn’t find my umbrella. I looked under my seat, in the back seat, in those pockets on the back of the seat……it was nowhere. I did, however, find my daughters itty bitty firetruck umbrella. I grabbed it and ran inside with that bright red, no bigger than a piece of paper, umbrella. Of course I gave it up to her on the way back to the car and I was soaked.

  4. I work at a restaurant and people always leave their umbrellas. At one point, we had 11 in lost and found. I love it because whenever it’s raining and I’ve forgotten mine, I just “borrow” one of those. AWESOME!

    1. I understand this! When I was in grad school, I worked on campus and students left their umbrellas in class all the time. Professors dutifully collected them and took them to the academic offices, but no one really ever came back to claim them. :)

  5. Last year when I was studying abroad in Italy, I arrived with 1 umbrella, and ended up finding/buying/being given enough umbrellas to land me at 8!! Had to give them all away before I came back! I love karma.

  6. I once found a perfectly fine umbrella in a garbage can right as I was walking out into a storm at school. As soon as I mad it to the garage another girl was standing there without one. I quickly passed it along. She was just as excited as I was when I found it.

  7. I love this one! Umbrella karma exists, it is real!

I once gave an umbrella to two earnest students who were out canvassing for a charity. It started to pour rain while they were at my door, so I donated an umbrella to their cause, as well.

    1. The Golden Rule of umbrellaing … give to others as you would want given to you ;D

P.S. How was your yard party? Did you have a lot of guests in attendance??

  8. To the person who found my umbrella at a London bus stop:

Please enjoy, I spent two days in Amsterdam in the pouring rain before my umbrella karma kicked in.

    Sincere and Soggy,
    Pam

    People littering their broken umbrellas.

(I know it’s useless now and you’re peeved, but that’s what the garbage is for, you loon!)

  10. My umbrella karma is that the one I have keeps coming back to me again. I left it in class one day and didn’t even realize it until three days later, came back and it was still in the classroom right where I left it!

  11. Someone once told me a theory they had that there is a finite number of umbrellas in this world – and the same ones just keep going around and around. hahaha. Umbrella Reincarnation?

  12. Nope! I apparently decided to stick with the whole I grew up near Seattle thing and not use umbrellas. Ok, so if a friend has one open or something and it’s not too awkward to stand under it together, sure. But I’m not about to add the weight and hassle of a wet umbrella when I can just walk around without one, enjoying the rain (or using my hoodie or coat hood). Well, as long as I can cover my neck. I hate the feel of rain hitting my neck, at least when it’s cold (and WA is not a warm rain place). However, I do get the excellence of this idea for those who do prefer umbrellas.
