#150 When the cashier has extra coupons stashed at the register and uses them just for you

It’s time to forget the corporate bigwigs smoking cigars, swimming in gold bars, and driving fast cars for just a second.

Suddenly you and the cashier are on the same team.

AWESOME!

I’ll be speaking at The Word on the Street book festival in Toronto this Sunday! It’s a free event and I’d love to meet you there.

Simone, I believe your wedding is soon, so you’ve likely most plans in place; purchases made, but I’ve heard of couples complete wedding’s on coupons! Honey-moons too! Good advertising and more corporate cigars for the company big-wigs, but hey…in the name of love…I say, why not!!!
I saw it on Oprah a few years ago, so it must be true story- right!
Then money saved can be spent elsewhere…home renovation…baby nursery?!
      Best wishes=D

  2. I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS D:

I am a cashier, and have done it. Technically, we aren’t allowed, but every now and then I’ll know of an awesome deal and try to get the store coupon to my till to give it to them. Recently, we had canned meat on sale, (think flaked ham, chicken, etc) for 1.00 a can, this stuff is usually at least 1.69-2.39 a can. no limits either, which is a rarity. Then on top of that, there was a 50 cent in-store coupon. This old man who is a regular comes through raving about how this meat he buys is so cheap. I scored him the coupons on top, he was on cloud nine! Just don’t let the wrong supervisor catch you though……
Feels good to give someone an unexpected deal when you can.

  4. a few times cashiers used their discount cards for me… as you said, unexpected deals are awesome!

  5. I did this all the time when I was a cashier. Of course I did only did it to my favorite customers. It was sort of my way of saying thank you to all the customers who didn’t yell at me at one time or another. You’d be surprised how often you get yelled at for doing your job as a cashier. I kind of miss that job.

For the past 3 months, at the locally owned grocery store, their reps have been walking through and randomly dotting shelves with coupons for even a half gallon milk, box of tea, loaf of bread! It’s like a treasure trove!
There’s a pharmacy in our town has a coupon when 10 of their name brand products are bought, boxes are filled and you get $15 in store product. One day a coy smile came over a clerks face as she filled my card, said, “I appreciate regular customers like you, now go buy yourself something nice:)
Cheers to all service reps who are SO considerate!

If only there were some free air fare and accomodations coupons for the word on the street, book festival in Toronto! I’d SO be there!!!

It’s not just giving you an extra coupon, but informing you of the deals you might not know about..

The other day I was buying lots of cereal (all the sugary ones that makes the cashiers think that I have little kids at home, but really the Lucky Charms are just for me!), and the cashier kindly let me know: “Hey – if you’re buying 4 boxes of cereal, you get 2 free gallons of milk!”, and she gave me the time to spring to the back of the store and pick up my milk. Very sweet!

Or when the people at the restaurant combine your order into a combo you didn’t even know about, and save you some money that way!

Three cheers for helpful retail employees!

  9. I love it when this happens. It’s like a special little gift from somone you barely know.

I’m a cashier at Target, and I love doing this! Especially because it makes people’s days.

Yesterday we ended up going to McDonald’s for a quick meal, and the man standing in line behind us gave us his coupons. Awesome!

  12. Very awesome. It happened to me the other day :)

I’m just soooo happy I can finally say it: this happened to me today! Really, I was in a department store and there was a fantastic coupon offer I did not know about, but the clerk gave me the coupon to use for my purchase! I saved a load of money! Gotta love kind clerks…she made my weekend!

I’m just soooo happy I can finally say it:

  15. Weird. I just had a bad experience due to a retailer not accepting my coupon. Ended up with gum on my shoe. Came to your blog to find something awesome, hoping to feel better. Saw this blog, which – to be honest – is like the alternate-universe version of my afternoon.

But strangely, your post has lifted my spirits. I guess it has to do with the nature of the human experience. Even when we are experiencing life from seeming alternate universes, inevitably, we continue to find ourselves connected in interesting ways.

Thank you for post. I feel better now.

I hear ya there.. but in most cases, not accepting a coupon is completely out of a cashiers hands. I’d LOVE to accept your coupons without having to scrutinize the fine print, expiry dates, limits, and ensuring the coupon is actually for the item purchased. But alas, I can’t.
Good luck in the future. And know that there are cashiers out there who do try and give the extra deal when they can.

  16. P.S. Anyone know how to get gum off a shoe?

  17. Sam

I use to do this when I worked at a grocery store and pet store.

Awesome was just listening to you chatting to Alan Brough on the ABC radio. Thanks for reminding us of awesomeness. Sue

  19. Yay. Aussiness. I’m in Bris, QLD :)

      sydney, nsw :D
how is the weather up in brissie? – over the weekend we had the most misserable time! – all last week was so beautiful & then hit saturday & rain rain rain! – heard on the weekend we only had one hour of sunshine! ugh!

      - so looking forward to heading up your way in a few weeks for our honeymoon! – going to the gold coast & then tahiti! :D

  20. The weather’s been pretty sunny and warm here. Pity it’s raining down there. They DID say summer in QLD was going to be wet ;( OH well time to organise inside fun stuff then!

You should check out bom.gov.au for the weather up here and the gold coast if you’re looking to come up for a holiday, just in case :)

The gold coast accommodation should be lovely. I’ve stayed there plenty of times. It’s very commercialised there now, I like the sunny coast better nowadays if I want to chill. Mmm… So looking forward to holidays at the end of the year. Congratulations on getting married! How exciting for you! I hope you have a blast and I hope QLD weather and people treat you well.

  21. Back in the springtime I was shopping for a party dress for my parents’ 50th anniversary dance and I was delighted to find a perfect dress on special at my favourite department store. When I went to check out the cashier asked if I had any coupons. When I said that I didn’t, the lady ahead of me, who had already checked out, gave me a quick elbow to the ribs and I glanced down to see her handing me her coupon below the counter. I piped up “actually, I do” and presented the coupon I’d been handed. The cashier was totally wise to what had occured, but just grinned from ear to ear as he scanned the coupon which gave me an extra 30% off. That’s one of my awesomest moments of 2011.

Another awesome moment was seeing Neil’s talk today at Word on the Street, which was very inspiring and made me smile.

  22. Great seeing you at the Word on the Street! We live just north of Walmart’s head office, so we are neighbours of sorts.

  23. This IS pretty awesome- whe it happens!

  24. Your blog site could be very interesting. I’m loving each of the information and facts you’re sharing with everyone!

  25. I had this happen this weekend! $1.00 Mike’s Hard Lemonade! Awesome!
