#832 Finally having your ears pop back to normal long after a flight or swim

Get ready for a bang

Do you sometimes forget your ears need a good popping?

Maybe after the jet cabin decompresses, concert wraps up, or swimming lessons finish the volume in your ear dials down a notch and your head feels all plugged up. But you just get used to it. You pick up your baggage, clear customs, jump on the subway, towel off, get changed, and life keeps on tr–BAM! THEN SUDDENLY YOUR EAR POPS, EVERYTHING IS REALLY LOUD, AND YOU’RE BACK TO NORMAL AGAIN.

AWESOME!

  1. It is such a strange sensation, that you could forget that you’ve been waiting for your ears to pop. But that surge of renewed volume is, indeed, AWESOME.

  2. Yeah, and then you wonder if you’ve been shouting at people ever since you got off the plane!

  3. Oh my gosh this is SO me today… My right ear is still just occasionally popping since I got off a plane last THURSDAY. That’s right… it’s been 6 days. It will pop and then get re-stopped. … I may need to see a doctor. So when it finally works again, it’s going to be TOTALLY awesome.

  4. Last week was horrible. I don’t know what was wrong, but my ears kept needing popped and my head would feel like it was going to explode until I did, but then not 5 minutes later, they would need popped again. It drove me crazy. I realized Monday that I could hear fine and I did a little dance.

  5. It always takes a really long time for this to happen when I get off a plane, but I always like it when things get lound and normal again.

  6. I’m always borderline panicking since I’m terrified it will stay like that forever so it’s a HUGE relief when they pop back to normal.

  7. It’s so weird, but AWESOME because I can pop my ears whenever I need when going over hills in the car or flying. On my first plane trip back in ’08 I was given chewing gum to help pop them but it didn’t really do that great a job, but then I yawned and noticed that popped my ears completely! So then I quickly taught myself how to make the yawning action/shape of the back of my throat by lifting my soft pallate, in about a second without anything showing on the outside. So I just do that constantly on the plane and I’m fine :))
But it is indeed awesome because a couple times back in primary school when we’d have school swimming lessons at the local pool, we’d be lining up for the bus after and I’d be hopping with my head on the side, trying to get the water out, and I’d think I’d done it, but then a day or two later suddenly the volume level would increase and the one ear I didn’t get would pop and a little water would come out of my ear haha :P

  8. Yes! Add the Mountains! Even though I have tinnitus and hearing loss, I still hear more clearly and feel elated when they’re not permanently plugged forever!

  9. This used to be a regular thing for me whenever I visited family as they lived south of us in lower elevation, so the trip entailed some ear popping. It seemed I never realized it needed it ’til it actually happened, then…whoa! Awesome hearing indeed!

  10. It has been slightly over 21 years and my ears have yet to pop. They say i was born deaf, but i will show them. One day, my ears are going to pop and i will be able to hear. Just watch me!
