She hasn't been loving to my dad for a long time either. I was raised in her home but my dad lives with her and cares for her now. It hurt me to see how she treated him growing up. Never supporting him to pursue his dreams. Never encouraging him to get an education. I told myself I had let my resentment towards my grandma go. But when the pandemic hit my emotions bubbled up again. I realized I was still carrying so much pain. I couldn't shake the feeling that my grandma didn't love me. It broke my heart. One day I picked up the phone. I was nervous but felt I needed to talk to her. She is so old and the virus was spreading fast in Bolivia and I worried I might not have another chance. We had a short phone call and then I went to visit her with my mom. We sat down to grilled chicken and vegetables while having a simple conversation about our lives. I learned she was 91 years old. I didn't know that. I learned about her parents and the financial stress she had growing up. I didn’t know that either. We connected in a different way. And with a new urgency I think we both felt. My grandma was never nice to my mom so seeing my mom be so compassionate and loving towards her was also energizing for me. I got to see that forgiveness and love come in many different ways. My parents divorced when I was so young but suddenly there we all were: me, my mom, my dad, and my grandma. My whole family. Suddenly together and having lunch. My grandma was never the grandma I saw in the movies. She wasn't the mom I saw in the movies either. I now realize she never will be. But I tell myself my grandma loves me every day and I know I love her back. Sometimes love isn't as big or clean or obvious as I want it to be. Sometimes it is smaller and messier and fainter. It's not the love I dreamed I would have. But I am so grateful for the chance to sit down and reconnect.” - Monica Miriam Flores Rojas from Bolivia⠀

[NEW 3 BOOKS PODCAST!] @brenebrown is the beacon [NEW 3 BOOKS PODCAST!]

@brenebrown is the beacon we all need in our lives.

In this clip from our chat she's talking about what it means to be spiritually fit. Her incredible vulnerability is on display as always.

Brené Brown is the author of multiple #1 New York Times bestsellers including THE GIFTS OF IMPERFECTION, DARE TO LEAD and DARING GREATLY. She hosts two top ranked podcasts UNLOCKING US and DARE TO LEAD featuring guests like President Barack Obama, Dolly Parton, Alicia Keys, and President Joe Biden.

She is prolific. She is profound. And she speaks in subtle doses of wisdom that always sound simple but then smack you in the forehead like a big rubber mallet.

How do we best honor our partners? How do we operationalize love? What are Brené Brown's 3 most formative books?

We chat about this and much more in this intimate and wide-ranging conversation.

My kids watch Mister Rogers every week. It’s the My kids watch Mister Rogers every week. It’s the only show they watch that I used to watch, too. The values are so deep and timeless and inclusive and centered around how to be a kind person and neighbor. I have always been amazed at Fred Rogers and his beautiful marriage with Joanne Rogers for over 50 years and the great work they created through @fredrogersproductions including the wonderful @danieltigertv

Joanne died today at age 92.

May she rest in peace.
