#539 When you open a book to the exact page you were looking for

You cracked the case.

Seriously, when you pop open that textbook, flip open the yellow pages, or split the spine of that beach novel right to the spot you’re looking for it’s a beautiful moment.

Suddenly you transform into a gloomy trenchcoat-wearing detective who solves the case just by glancing at the crime scene. Yes, the street’s been taped off, someone’s crying under a blanket on the curb, and the city police are filling out witness statements on their notepads.

That’s when you peel up in a navy blue squad card, calmly light up a cigarette, and then stare at the surrounding buildings for a few minutes with furrowed eyebrows.

Then you calmly walk back to your cruiser, smile softly, and roll your window down at the local police before screaming away down the wet roads.

  1. Crossing the street on the diagonal:

You’re on the corner of a street and want to get to the opposite corner, diagonally across. As you wait for the sign to change from the hand to the little man, you try to decide between cross ahead and then to the side, or cross to the side and then ahead. But then all the signs turn to walk and pedestrians from all corners start to cross the street. Everyone knows the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, so you forge ahead, right into the middle of the busy intersection. Fear not, brave soul, for you won’t get run over. The gods of the pedestrians are watching over you.

  2. Getting the perfect piece in Tetris.

The Tetris gods have been kind to you. Place it rightfully in the exact nook. Exact cranny. And then listen to the resounding jingle as the whole line you have created disappears.

    You’ve done it.

    AWESOME!

  3. Peeling a sticker off in one fell swoop.

Maybe you’re trying to remove the label off the back of that shiny new book cover. Or maybe you’ve been drinking at a bar and are finding ways to uncomfortably fidget while talking to the attractive person next to you. You dig your nails under the sticker, and start pulling up ever so gently, navigating the peeling path this way and that way keep it from ripping. Sometimes there’s a moment of hesitation when the sticker stubbornly clings to it’s surface, like a child clinging to its mother on the first day of kindergarten. But you patiently tug, and coax, and there’s that final sigh of relief as the sticker comes off cleanly in your hand, leaving a shiny non-gooey surface in all of its glory.

Yes, the satisfaction that comes from conquering a stubborn sticker can only be described as…

    Awesome!

  4. Going to work on your homework for tomorrow and realizing you don’t have any that night.

9 o clock rolls around. Oh no! You have to finish your homework. Open up your backpack and check out your assignment notebook. Oh look, it’s empty.

    Awesome!

  5. The Blooper Reel!!!
After watching a heavy, emotional film, its nice to see the actors that were once crying and cursing having a good laugh and playing practical jokes on each other.

    AWESOME!

  6. The end of Halloween, when you’re trading candy with your friends. The apples lie abandoned in the corner, your friend with nut allergies gets to unload all her snickers bars in exchange for skittles, and soon you’re all lying on your backs moaning about how much sugar you’ve just consumed. =)

  7. When the power goes out and you go into pioneer mode.

Our lives seem to revolve around computers, phones, and anything brought to life via some sort of electrical surge.

But when the wind blows rough, and cats and dogs fall from the sky, and one giant spark blows out the flame, all that’s left to do is light a few candles. We become disconnected, then reunited with simplicity. Put on a pair of your favorite worn out PJs (no one can see them anyway), kick back, and bask in the darkness.

  8. Watching a live performance!
There’s a magic about it that digital reproductions can’t replicate. It’s happening now, it’s happening live, anything can happen. That music isn’t ones and zeroes translated through to your sticky earphones, it’s twanging guitar strings, piano keys like raindrops, and real live human voices, filling up the entire room with music. Or maybe it’s improv theater, where anything could happen, where you’re close enough to reach out and touch the actors. Maybe they’ll even ask you for suggestions! Even if you have a camera, there’s something about this moment that can’t be captured and will never happen again, but it’s happening right now, so enjoy it.

    1. I love to people-watch ANYWHERE! One time, my freshman year of college, my friend and I sat down on one of the couches outside the dining hall. We just watched and watched for like two hours. People went in and out of the dining hall and saw us there both times. We had a good laugh at how lame we must have looked, just sitting there for an afternoon, but we had a great time! :)

  9. Jumping on the random hopscotches drawn in chalk on the sidewalk when walking home.

  10. Learning something new that you would probably never ever use, but its just nice to know it anyway.

    1. Watching a kid do anything for the first time is awesome.
pouring a glass of milk, writing their name, taking their first steps, dicovering their hands and feet, the list goes on and on.
So cute to watch how they try to figure things out.

  11. Birthday cake.
Now I try not to eat a lot of sweets nowadays. I use to bake cakes all the time, but I don’t anymore. The only time I allow myself to eat cake is during someone’s birthday…..and its always awesome.
The big icing flowers, pretty designs….mmmmmm!

  12. Getting a friend to help you clean your house.
I love to clean other people’s houses. I really like it when they are moving and we have to clean after they get all their stuff out or cleaning the new place before they move in. I don’t know why I like it, its hard work…. I guess its helping a friend get to that next stepping stone in their life.

  13. Remembering that little bit of French or Spanish that you leaned in high school. Yeah, you took that class for a year or two and you could speak that languange almost perfectly back then…but now… you only remember a few words, but its awesome!

    1. Salut!

Un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, dix

      Oui! Merci!

      Au revoir!

      ;D

      1. :-) Love it!! I took French. All my friends took Spanish. Its nice to see others use French.

        1. SAME HERE! The only two languages offered at my high school were Spanish & French, and nearly everyone took Spanish. Not me! :)

  14. Making lists. I have lists for almost everything.
    Lists for the store
Lists for things I want to do or accomplish before my time is up
    Lists of songs I like
My list of my favorite movies
Lists of things to do for the weekend
List of people I want to get back in contact with
List of movies I still want to see
List of places I would like to go to
Yeah…lists are awesome…especially this list of awesome!

    1. Now I think that the word list is a funny word. I know someone already posted -saying a word so much it loses it meaning or sounds funny. LOL…

    2. I think the final entry should be about lists. Finally finishing the last item on the list! Awesome!

  15. I’m pretty sure this one is already on this list, but just to make sure………
    Celebrities kids names. Yeah… awesome.

  16. Cutting a snowflake out of paper.
Fold the paper just right, cut out a triangle here, a half circle there and unfold. A little piece of awesome.

  17. Think way back to grade school. Sitting in groups of desks with your classmates and then all of sudden BAM! New Seating Plan Day!
The anticipation as a kid to find out who your next desk buddy would be… would it be the girl you have a crush on, or the kid who picks his nose and has an iguana in his backpack? Maybe you’d be sitting in the corner on your own for hitting Mr. Smith with that spitball in the back of his head last week? Who knows, its seating plan roulette time!

    Awesome!

  18. Empty parking lots.
some people learn to drive in empty parking lots. ( I learned on a dirt road)
Some people just like to hang out in empty parking lots.
Some do donuts with their cars……
Some act silly and push each other around in shopping carts in empty parking lots….

    1. I learned to drive in a cemetery! Fill in your own “everyone’s dead already” joke here.

      1. Well, I bet it was a pretty grave situation in your town when you finally got your license.

(Sorry – I really tried to do better, but nothing was coming.. so that’s all you get.)

        1. …groan…

Well, you’re not that far off the mark. It took me 3 tries! AND I caused an accident while driving the Driver Training car (no injuries) and lost 3 points off my licence BEFORE I even got it. The funny thing is, I’m actually a really good driver now. Really.

          1. Sure you are. 90% of people say that they are above average drivers.

I on the other hand, objectively am a terrific driver.

And I don’t make any *bones* about that..

(Eh? Eh? See what I did there?)

  19. When the next book in the series you love comes out…

You go online, you check the author’s website, you circle the release date on your calendar, and for the next couple of months, you haunt the bookstores, waiting, waiting… then the appointed day comes and once you enter the store, you make a beeline for the display, grab that precious treasure and yell, “IT’S HERE!! I’VE GOT IT!!”

    Awesome!

  20. Lying in bed cuddled up with your partner/dog/stuffed animal etc watching a raging storm outside

  21. ONE LINERS…

Making someone laugh by uttering one single phrase, or even one word…and the best is if they start crying because it’s just that funny…

    1. My husband does that to me all the time, and it’s one of the best things about being married to him!

  22. Finding the perfect song for your current situation…

Like when you just broke up with someone and you hear this upbeat song about a woman moving on from a broken relationship… just like you

    e.g. Reba McEntire’s “Strange” :)

Or actually coming up with your own ditty…

Like for a sunny day, I chant, “Sun Sun Sunny Day, Never ever go away”…

  23. Swapping house keeping secrets.
Different ways to get rid of ants or flies, secret ways to clean things, better ways to cook, etc.

Someone once told me that to get soap scum out of your tub, use a used fabric softener..the sheet that you put in the dryer.
I did it and it works!!!

  24. Awesome is when your partner decides to take the first shower in the morning after the alarm goes off. You get that extra 20 minute nap that’s WAY better than hitting the snooze button. Plus you get reawakened by a yummy smelling lover.

  25. That night you switch from winter pajamas to summers pajamas. Goodbye flannel, fleece, and socks. Putting on the tank top and boxer shorts that are perfectly worn in and actually being able to feel your sheets again is the real beginning of Spring!

    1. I can’t really stand the feel of flannel pajamas, so yeah…when i switch out of those into my nice cool summer PJ’s it is beyond awesome.

        1. I think next winter I’m just going to keep my summer PJ’s on and throw on an extra blanket.
I dont think I have any fleece pj’s

          1. I am a year-round summer pj wearer. I can’t stand sleeping in pants — flannel OR fleece — because they get all tangled up in the sheets. Sleep shorts all the way!

  26. The first rays of sunlight shining through your window in the morning is awesome.

  27. butterfly kisses….
My daughter loves to give me butterfly kisses. They tickle and we laugh.
In case someone doesn’t know- its when one person gently flutters their eye lashes on the other’s cheek.

  28. Little quotes or sayings.
My favorite, the one I try to live my life by nowadays is, “Throw caution to the wind.” I have a post-it note on my computer that says, “Throw it.” No one knows what exactly that means but me and that’s awesome. (well…now all of you know what it means..LOL)

  29. Packing tape dispenser. One hand to hold the box closed and one hand to put on the tape. Just pull and cut in one swoop.

  30. Chapstick….don’t leave home without it. I actually think I’m a bit addicted to it. Vanilla is my fav.

  31. Those perfect blue sky days.

So perfect, you want to bottle it up and save it for later.

  32. Mini… ANYTHING

    Marshmallows
    Pies
    cookies
    action figures.

Jeez, the list goes on and on

  33. Ridiculously tricked out sunglasses.

A friend of mine had neon pink Raybands.

    So cool.

      1. someone gave my husband one that plays the opening to Monday Night Football, and for some unknown reason, the sound of it causes me to laugh involunatarily. It’s hilarious!

  34. Texting….
You only want to ask this person one question, but you know if you call them you’re gonna be on the phone for hours. You’re not in a talking mood or you’re just too busy. So send them a quick text, they send one back…and you’re done.
