#539 When you open a book to the exact page you were looking for

You cracked the case.

Seriously, when you pop open that textbook, flip open the yellow pages, or split the spine of that beach novel right to the spot you’re looking for it’s a beautiful moment.

Suddenly you transform into a gloomy trenchcoat-wearing detective who solves the case just by glancing at the crime scene. Yes, the street’s been taped off, someone’s crying under a blanket on the curb, and the city police are filling out witness statements on their notepads.

That’s when you peel up in a navy blue squad card, calmly light up a cigarette, and then stare at the surrounding buildings for a few minutes with furrowed eyebrows.

Then you calmly walk back to your cruiser, smile softly, and roll your window down at the local police before screaming away down the wet roads.

  1. Wrapping a gift perfectly.
I am a horrible gift wrapper. There’s always something lapping over where is wasn’t meant to, the corners are all poking out everywhere, I use way too much tape….but then I wrap one perfectly and it looks awesome

    1. I love, love, LOVE to wrap presents! Especially if it’s a perfectly-cornered square/rectangle box.

Both my parents are present-wrapping pros and have passed their knowledge and skills along to me. Woohoo!

      1. I am only a good wrapper when the box is a square or cube. You add something in there that is odd shaped..there’s no way its gonna look good.

  2. Being able to start a campfire on the first try.
I hate trying to start a campfire. I am always unsuccessful, but hubby’s buddy can do it on the first try almost all the time.

  3. This may already be on the list, but meaningful snail mail is amazing. You flip through the stack of coupons, bills, bank statements, that cause you donated to once and get tons of unwanted mail from, and out peeks an envelope with the name of your best friend who moved across the country after graduation in the return address.

    Awesome!

  4. using things as musical instruments that generally aren’t.
Spoons, rubberbands, trashcans, pencils, or clicky pens.

  5. Potlucks. Everyone brings their favorite food and you get a heaping plate of homemade deliciousness.

    Awesome!

    1. I love having potlucks here at work. Seeing what everyone can make it awesome. I always bring my chocolate chocolate chip cheesecake….its yummy!

      1. Yes, a work pot luck is awesome … not only is there delicious food that day, but it seems to bring people together who wouldn’t normally be (read: higher-ups and peons). Everyone is in a better mood. :)

  6. Standing in the pouring rain because you just don’t care. Let it wash away all your stress, bad feelings, worries. Who cares that your hair and clothes are getting soaked – you feel just plain

    AWESOME!

  7. Starting a new tradition.
One of our new traditions is eating at a Chinese restaurant on our wedding anniversary. We went out and had Chinese the night we got married and I told him that’s what I wanted to do every year. Makes it easy for us to think of something to do.

  8. Smiling.
Especially if it’s a genuine smile.

Smiling is awesome. It makes you happier, it makes others happier. Buddy the Elf might even say it’s his favorite.

  9. Getting a seed that’s stuck in your teeth out! You know, you can’t tell if it’s the stuck in the top or bottom rows of teeth, and you can’t pick it out, or even brush it out. But then…it’s out.

    AWESOME!

  10. Being able to laugh at yourself.
We’ve all done some embarrassing things, but its awesome if you can just laugh it off without actually being embarrassed.
When i burn something in the kitchen, I don’t get mad, i laugh at myself and my absent mindness.

    1. I was thinking of this this morning!

I came home to see my parents for the long weekend, and I realized this morning after my shower that I’d totally forgotten to pack everything I need to get ready (makeup, hair dryer, brush, Chi, etc.)! All I could do was laugh at my idiocy.

  11. Waking up, checking your e-mail on a whim, and realizing you won that contest you never thought you had a chance at. Something you entered because you thought, “that looks cool!” Next thing you know, you’ve got the pirze! AWESOME.

  12. Being a college/graduate student I highly appreciate this one:

Waking up after a night of drinking, and miraculously NOT being hung over. No headache, no getting sick, no waking up 5 hours later than planned.

Just a beautiful day where you can finish everything on you to-do list because your liver decided to take one for the team.

    AWESOME!

    1. I have never in my life had a hangover. of course I stop drinking when I feel more than buzzed. I like to drink just enough to get a buzz and keep it, but i have never woken up with a hangover. It really IS awesome!

  13. Finding that one missing piece of paperwork from the file. You’ve got all the miscellaneous signed documents, but you’ve been missing that one crucial piece. You go through a stack that has been tucked away in the corner of your office, and there it is! The name you’ve been looking for!

    Awesome!

  14. Fireplace + Hot Cocoa

It’s cold outside, maybe snowing or raining, and you’re curled up in a cozy blanket, basking in front of a warm fire with a big mug of hot chocolate.

    Awesome!

  15. Your ringtones.
I sometimes let people pick what they want their ringtone to be on my phone, but they don’t know what I REALLY picked out.

    1. Yes! And it’s hilarious to hear what other people have chosen as ringtones (like strangers when you’re out in public). The other day, the guy in front of me in line at McAlister’s had “The Streak” by Ray Stevens as his ringtone!

  16. Finally moving up from the kid table.
I sat there until I was about 13…. and I ended up back at the kid table 6 years later so I could sit with my kid. This year….she can handle the kid table without me….I’m moving up to the adult table………again.

    1. I’m 23 and still at the kid’s table. Way more awesome than the grown-ups, and we have a new generation of kids too. I never wanna grow up!

  17. Finally getting that yo-yo to come back up after throwing it down. God knows how many times you’ve tried and that one time it did…oh, really awesome! Makes you wanna practice more!!

    1. I am a terrible yo-yo-er. :(

So, yes. When and if I can make the yo-yo come back up, I feel extra-accomplished!

  18. Summer barbecues.

It’s a time when everyone gets together, have fun, catch up on things and pig out… mmm, barbecue…

  19. Cleaning out your closet of all the old things.

You make more space, find things you’ve lost, find things you think you’ve given away but haven’t, and if you want, make a fashion show out of it…

  20. Playing with toy magnets! Defy the gravity of the entire Earth and pick up a string of paperclips. Stick a magnet under the table and race things around on top of the table – it’s like magic. Feel the tiny invisible repelling force and you try to stick two like sides together.

  21. Seeing someone twiddle their thumbs is pretty awesome. It’s something people always say, but people rarely do. So if I ever see someone ACTUALLY passing time by twiddling their thumbs, I think, “Awesome!”

  22. It’s awesome when the roadwork on the road / highway / bike path, etc. that you frequently travel is finally finished. It’s a double-awesome: finally, the cones, signs, and construction workers are gone … and the road is now new and improved!

After days, weeks, or even months of reduced speeds and lanes, you can now fly by happily on your way to wherever. :)

  23. pulling the feathers out of your pillows. You can go back to sleep without something poking into your cheek or the back of your neck.

  24. When a song that you haven’t heard in a long time, and completely forgot about, pops up on your shuffle, and you still know all the words.

Songs that remind you of friends, or special moments in time.

  25. peeling the sticky plastic off a new appliance/computer/etc…

a brand new start with no scratches, dust, or dents!

    AWESOME!

  26. Using something as a pillow that you normally wouldn’t use. Maybe you got stuck at the airport, maybe you’re on a long roadtrip, or you’re anyplace where you want to sleep and don’t have a pillow. I’ve been known to use garment bags, wadded up blankets, backpacks, and, of course, the occasional arm of a friend. It’s such a satisfying feeling when you can macguyver up a pillow and gently drift to sleep in a random location. And sure, your neck aches in the morning and you may regret it a tiny bit, but overall, the feeling is just-
    Awesome!

  27. Finding your Easter Basket.

When you’re 20 years old and home from college for Easter break and you can still count on getting to look for your Easter baskets bright and early. The excitement of finally finding it after hours of searching never seems to lose it’s glory. It is one of the few days out of the year that you can still be a kid again. And the look of conspiracy on your mom’s face (A.K.A. the Easter Bunny) when you want to give up.

    It’s Awesome!

  28. Unexpectedly, when you and your spouse share a fun moment just by eyes meeting …. AWESOME!!

  29. Congrats Jess B. and great comment…yes I love when this happens. I don’t have a bookmark so I just have to remember what page I was on, so when I flip to that page without searching…it IS awesome!

  30. When you see someone you don’t expect to be nice do something really thoughtful…makes you feel all warm and fuzzy! It’s a nice reminder that everyone cares, even the people who we might not like too much or who normally seem uncaring, and that there is plenty of good in the world to go around!

  31. We were just looking for relevant site articles for my assignment homework and I happened to stumble upon yours. Thanks for your valuable info!

  32. Two other awesome book things ( apologies if they’re already listed)

    1. Chuckling out loud or smiling from reading something good, inspiring or funny.

    2. Seeing a stranger chuckle or smile as they’re reading in peace.

  33. Damn, very nice website. I actually came across this on Ask Jeeves, and I am stoked I did. I will definately be revisiting here more often. Wish I could add to the post and bring a bit more to the table, but am just taking in as much info as I can at the moment.

    Thank You

  34. Many of us zealous Sunday School students can take this to an extreme. The longer you’ve had that tattered old tome of scripture, the more places your fingers can find without even thinking of it. Like the lightning-fast username/password, as soon the teacher says the book and chapter, the information bypasses all conscious thought and poof! The book is lying open to the right place on your lap.

  35. Although joined far too late to really get in the game; was very entertaining and heart warming to read the entries and get to know people even better=)

  36. My developer is trying to persuade me to move to .net from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the expenses. But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using WordPress on a variety of websites for about a year and am nervous about switching to another platform. I have heard good things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can import all my wordpress content into it? Any kind of help would be really appreciated!

  37. Another problem within output of good cigar is really a technology. There’s no actual approach to automate most critical operations which are actually crucial for your last excellence of the item. Only individual hands can actually get to the a higher level excellence required for producing an outstanding stogie.

  38. Omg best thing ever!!! Im so tired at school this is the best thin that can happen to a 5th grader!!!!! 
