#937 The smell of rain on a hot sidewalk

Hot fumes coming at'cha

There’s just something about the smell of rain on a hot sidewalk. It’s sort of like the rain cleans the air — completely hammering all the dirt and grime particles down to the ground and releasing some hot, baked-in chemicals from the pavement. It smells best if it hasn’t rained in a while and the sidewalk is scalding hot — then it sort of sizzles and steams up into a big, hot, intoxicating whiff.

AWESOME!

Wow!

  1. I looooooove this one. Well, I just really love rain. I remember this one house we lived when I was a kid, it had this long sidewalk from the house to the driveway and when it rained I’d go out there barefoot and enjoy everything about it. I need to do that now. I miss the smell and the feel of it.

    1. I too love the feeling of bare feet in the rain, Bekah:) Next to walking on pea gravel it’s got to be the most natural reflexology! Definitely awesome!

      1. If I could go barefoot all the time I would. Well..except in my back yard where we have a holly tree and thorn bushes. I’ve already had to get 3 thorns out of my foot and one big one out of Lilly’s in the short time we’ve lived there.

        1. OUCH! My moccassins are the next best thing to my bare feet and protect from thorns, thistles and such things:)

  2. There’s a word for that. Petrichor. It comes from the greek words “petra” which means stone and “ichor” which was the blood of the gods. It’s both my favorite word and one of my favorite things in the world.

    1. Well if ever you are in the Tsawwassen area you sould go to Petra’s Art Kafe, where you can have a home made meal and a pottery painting party at the same time! It’s truly a spectacularly awesome experience!

  3. Someone recently added on awesome, the sensory perception of colourful lights in the rain on the side walk and black top…It’s truly a bonus awesome;
    I LOVE them both! Thank you!

  4. Oh, I really, really like this one. I just love everything about rain. Rain is one of my favourite things in the world. I love the smell, the sound, and the sight of rain. The only thing I don’t like about rain is those weird sun showers. When it rains but it’s not cloudy. It’s just not right. Anyway, thunderstorms are my absolute favourite. How it just rains and rains and rains all day. I could go on about rain forever. But I won’t. Anyway, I just really love this post.

    1. You’re such a great writer. I wish you would go on and on about all the things you love; your love of and for the rain. I bet you could come back with a delectable poem or something….eh?!:) Would be so nice of ya’!

      1. Thanks wendy! I’m not a really good poem writer, sorry. I wish I was though. Poets and writers and stuff are so good with words. My love of rain comes from my childhood on the coast, where it always rains a lot. Or at least that where I think it comes from. Anyway, thanks for the compliment wendy! You’re a pretty good writer too!

        1. *thanks:)
          I was born in Vancouver, (the west coast of Canada), and did some growing up in the rain forest of Lynn Valley, North Vancouver so also know and LOVE the rain. Bliss-ed Glory:)

  5. I enjoy a good rain once in a while, but got caught in a storm recently and it was actually a bit scary. My fave weather will soon be afoot…literally! SNOW!
