#909 Bakery air

Bakery air is that steaming hot front of thick, buttery fumes waiting for you just inside the door of a bakery. And girl, I’m just going to tell you straight up. That is some fine air.

Bakery air immediately fills you up with the sickly sweet smell of cooking cupcakes, crisping croissants, and the distinct aroma of globby breakfast paste turning into a delicious tray of hot oatmeal cookies.

It’s a powerful and intoxicating smell that rivals some of the best smells out there: late night summer barbecue, new car smell, gasoline, fresh baby, or even, dare I say it, campfire in the woods. Yes, I went there.

Now, is it just me, or do you ever feel sorry for the people working in the bakery? You know, because they might just get used to the smell and stop enjoying those hot bakery whiffs all the time? I really hope it’s not like that. I really hope working in a bakery never turns into a regular job full of early mornings, oven-scorched eyebrows, varicose veins, and floury underwear. No, bakery air is just too good for that. It can’t become another day at the office, it just can’t. So let’s just make sure we all enjoy it.

Catch some of those sugary vapors next time you’re running past a Cinnabon at the train station. Suck back a noseful of hot fumes next time you walk by an open bakery door on Saturday morning. And just make sure that when you stop to smell the roses, you stop to smell the croissants and date squares, too.

AWESOME!

  1. Ahhhh, there it is. This one is one of my favorites. Ok, just about any post about food is one of my favs. The smell of warm bread and donuts and cinnamon rolls and rolls and bread and bread and bread…. It’s just… Ahhhhhhhhhh. Ya know? Yeah, you know.

  2. You guys gonna be jealous but i have to say this. on the bottom of my best friends house there’s a bakery…and it smells like cake the whole time. Im pretty much there all the time. my usual excuse: I just came up to say hi :-P

    1. Even if she hadn’t been before, she’d definitely be my best friend once I discovered she lived above a bakery!

  3. Bakeries are the best stores ever. They smell good, and they sell good stuff. Probably even better than book stores. Well, maybe. I think book stores and bakeries are probably tied. Bakeries smell better though, I think.

    1. There is a store in San Diego that is a bookstore/bakery. I’m afraid to go in because I may never come back out.

  4. The “Posted on” date/time seems correct… But I feel like I was kept waiting for this post. Good thing that Bakery Air is so undeniably AWESOME! ;)

  5. I dont have a bakery but i own a tearoom and bake delicious things everyday… Scones, cakes, cookies and other lovely things and NO! I do not ever get tired of the wonderful smells!!

  6. All I want is to smell all these smells right now … at once. Guess I’ll settle for a solid whiff of the candle next to me. And boy, I’m just going to tell you straight up. That is some serious disappointment. ;)

  7. I love the sugar particulate matter in the air of bakeries. The microscopic sugar crystals stick in my nose and the smell lasts long after I’ve left.

    1. OK. yes, defo rates above dry cleaner and greasy spoon, equiv with camp fire and toasted marshmallows, BUT, on my walk home the other night, the wind picked up and i smelled my new baby grandson in my hair and OMG, smells that last long after I’ve left~ nothing can compare!

  8. Food is my favorite topic, so any post about food is one of my favorites. The bakery air is just awesome and takes me to my childhood. Remembers me the Sundays when I wake up with the smell of a hot and delicious bread made by my mummy. Cupcakes, croissants, cookies and others delicious it’s probably the paradise’s smell. Bakeries are probably the best stores ever, because of the air and also because they sell delicious stuff. One day I’ll buy a bakery and for sure I ‘ll never get used.
