#878 The smell and sound of a campfire

Feel the burn

Slicing and dicing a dead tree, tossing it on a pile of dirt, and setting it ablaze is pure joy.

As that dry, withered stump slowly releases years and years of energy soaked up from the sun, the air, and the ground around it, out come bright lights, whispering hisses, sizzling pops, and a thick, intoxicating smell of Musky Smoke N’ Pine Needles.

You can close your eyes and let your eyelids paint yellow and orange kaleidoscopes as the heat washes over you, rosying up your cheeks and giving you that nice, warm Hotface Effect. In that cold, dark forest, on that cold, dark log bench, beside that cold, dark lake, your ears and nose perk up, as you call on some of your primal, caveman instincts to focus on every little sound and smell around you.

AWESOME!

  1. Awwwww…this reminds me of high school. I grew-up in a town of 420 people. There wasn’t a whole lot for teenagers to do in that town. We hung out in the woods a lot.

  2. Ohhh man! This one is really one of my faves. Its so distinct and it connects with so many memories. Roasting marshmallows, making S’mores, telling stories, staying up late, laughing, sleeping in tents, burning a hot dog, seeing who can jump over the fire…. I love it. Its been a few years since I’ve gone camping and made a fire, but we finally got to use our fireplace the other night and it brought back the same memories. The smell, the sound, watching the flames dance…. I love all of it.

    1. It’s cool how so many memories can be centered around one object. This post is also one of my favourites.

  3. Campfires are the best fires. I like the smell in winter when you step outside and you can smell that someone has a fire in their fireplace. It makes it seem less cold.

  5. Just made our first fire for the season in the fireplace this past weekend. My daughter and nephew had such a great time building it, then we all got to sit back together, enjoy it and savour the smores, mmmm, soooo good :)

  6. I have so many wonderful memories associated with camp fires. From roasting marshmallows to sharing lovely conversation and music. Thank you for reminding me of all of this.
