#842 When the socks from the dryer all match up perfectly

match-those-socksPeeling apart that static-covered clump of socks is tense.

First you yank them from the dryer and dump the hot haystack on the bed. Then you start pairing up the easy ones — reconnecting brown argyle husbands with brown argyle wives and red-striped brothers with red-striped sisters. It’s free and easy love all around.

But then it happens.

You hit that big pile of white or black leftover socks and matching gets tough. You’re inspecting patterns and heel placements, checking textures and fades, all the while hoping, just hoping, that everything will work out fine.

As you approach the last few socks you do a quick mental count. You’re like a parent inspecting a newborn baby for ten little fingers and ten little toes, only all you’re looking for is whether or not you’ve got an even number of socks left on the bedspread.

If you do, and if they all match up perfectly, then you’re loving it. There are no missing tube socks or disappearing dress socks. Everything is locked and loaded, so you just put them all together, take that basket of well-worn lovers to the dresser, and dump them all in with a big smile on your face.

  1. Someone was looking at my clothesline the other day. After a full minute of silence, they quietly noted that not only had I matched all the socks at the pegging stage, but I’d only ever used matching pairs of pegs. Two blues on this shirt, two pinks on those socks, two whites on those pants…

    I have issues. :P

    1. I’m enjoying picturing your color coordinated, ultra matching laundry line. I enjoy organizing pretty much anything. Bet your closets probably look like a professional organizer’s closets. I love those pro organizer shows with all of their neat & tidy bins of similar objects. Organization=nirvana! Hey, nothing wrong with a little organization and order! LOL!

    2. Oh, you sound like my best friend. She has to match everything like that. Do you even have to have your underwear match the clothes you are wearing?

  2. If only this was possible with my socks. I wear mix-matched socks almost everyday, not even realizing I left his/her spouse in the drawer! XD It’ll take a million years before all of my socks are perfectly matched.

    1. I admire your flexibility! If my socks didn’t match, I’d probably spend too much time looking for a matching pair when, really, it would be fun to wear odd socks!

      1. It spares me a few seconds to a good couple of minutes. XD Ay, when you’re getting ready for school, you’re racing against the clock!

    Seriously . . . I was SO fed up with mismatched socks, I went out and bought a few lingerie bags. Now we put our socks in the bag (making sure they go in pair by pair), and TA-DA! no more mismatched socks! :)

  4. It got to the point where I quit matching my socks up. I’d just throw them in a drawer. One day, I’d be wearing one green sock and one hot pink sock. Now I have mostly white socks so if I’m missing one, its not really a big deal. But you better bet your butt that when I do get everyone’s socks to match up… I’m doing the happy dance!! Especially since Zach likes to hide his socks. His favorite place to hide them is in his toy vaccum.

  6. I think I need some variety in my socks, do that they’ll be easier to match up. I need to get me some colourful socks.

  7. My grandson had one blue and one red at play group the other day and this every awesome post/conversation was sparked. One family having all white now…colossal costco bags of them! Another saying how much more fun it is to just wear mismatched! I like the bag idea too, Kate!
    Most the time, I just feel fortunate we have any socks at all, especially with no holes:)!
