I disabled 100% of alerts and notifications on my phone three years ago. It was tough at first. I started missing calls. I didn’t reply to texts for hours … then days. But now I think it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but it's okay to:

-Write in books that you own.
-Buy more books than you'll ever read.
-Read whatever books that interest you.
-Quit bad books to make room for brilliant ones.
-Read books in all formats (print, ebook, audiobook).

Loneliness rates have doubled since the 1980s and Loneliness rates have doubled since the 1980s and Vivek Murthy, former two-time US Surgeon General, says loneliness will be the next major epidemic. So if loneliness is being alone and sad … then what’s being alone and happy?

Solitude.

A few years ago, I picked up an incredible book called 'Solitude' by Michael Harris, bestselling author and winner of the Governor General's Award for his writing. It blew me away. Why? Because in our era of endless machine-gun blasts at our brains, I feel strongly that the ability to be alone, and to be alone well, is a muscle that is quickly atrophying.

Michael shares why we need to develop the strength and capacity to live and be by ourselves and how we go about cultivating a rich interior life. Michael has gone on to tackle our culture of consumerism in his more recent book 'All We Want: Building the Life We Cannot Buy,' and I think after this conversation you’ll agree this true “strength of mind” is a crucial aspect of living an intentional life as we face massive upheavals across many social and community elements of our lives.

For this classic chapter of 3 Books I flew to Michael’s apartment in Vancouver, BC where we discuss: How do you cultivate the area between awake and asleep? What does a healthy media diet look like? Why shouldn’t you talk about anything serious over texts? How do parents and children navigate coming out of the closet conversations? And, of course, what are the incredible Michael Harris's 3 most formative books?

Let's flip the page back to Chapter 29 now...

Here are three simple things that grow it:

1. Unfollow all news
2. Hang out with optimistic people
3. Keep a list of things that make you happy (I’ve been doing this for 17 years! You can get my daily awesome thing by following the link in @neilpasricha)

Do you agree with this meme? I think I agree with Do you agree with this meme?

I think I agree with it 80-90% of the time ... but I also like to keep a list of strong exceptions.

What would you add to my list?

Jurassic Park - I was 14 years old and the water rumbling in the cup on the dashboard still shakes me more than the book ever did.

Fight Club - Pitt and Norton at their peak was just unbeatable. And the movie makes the entire reveal at the end work on another level.

Election - Witherspoon / Broderick was this ridiculously snappy and strange couple chemistry that the book didn’t have.

Stand By Me - Although the book was incredible - and still astonishing that it’s in the same book as Shawshank Redemption! - the soundtrack was possibly the best soundtrack of all time and vital to the story.

Any others?
