#530 Listening to couples tell you how they met

Just look at them.

Cute, cuddly, giggly, smiling, holding hands wedged deeply in the restaurant booth. Picking nachos, sipping cola, you casually ask how they met and then listen with warm wide-eyed smiles as they stutter and stumble over all the little details and tiny moments that helped bring them together.

He did this, she did that, he was thinking this, she was thinking that. She thought he thought, but he thought she thought, and then there was this party, and then there was that night.

Just look at them.

AWESOME!

I’m such a sucker for hearing the how-we-met stories! It brings current couples closer, as they reminisce about their own story and puts a dream in the hearts of the single folk …

Much like that AMAZING video! I love it! Congratulations, Collin & Abigail. :)

    • Hey everyone, this is Collin
First of all, thank you so, so much for the kind words! Both Abigail and I are completely floored by the overwhelming response to all of this. An additional thanks for those of you who checked out the video and my song. Neil and Chad did a fantastic job putting it together, no? Anyway, just as a heads up, I am putting “1000 Awesome Things” up on iTunes. The sad part is, it’ll take 2-4 weeks to show up in the store. It’s not as instant as I had hoped for. Drop me a line at collinrainey@gmail.com if you want me to keep you informed about it’s official “iTunes Release.”

In the meantime, I’m as eager as you all are for the release of “The Book of Awesome.” Can’t wait!

Of course I love this awesome thing. But even better.. that video.

That song is absolutely amazing and I loved it. I have a really hard day coming up tomorrow and that made me feel so much better. It was exactly what I needed.

Is there any way I can buy this song?

  3. The only reason why I listen to these is to learn their secret…just HOW did they get together?

  4. Dani

This is crazy. I’ve only asked a couple how they met once. And it was yesterday afternoon! I was talking to my boss and his wife when they answered that question with a beautiful love story.
Then the rest started telling their love stories and how they got married!

    It was AWESOME listening.

And it’s flippin’ crazy this is todays post!

I don’t mean to kill the spirit or anything, but does anyone else think this book is getting just a tad bit over-hyped?

  6. Ronin

    This is really awesome!

It makes me realize that there definitely is someone out there for each and everyone of us.

  7. Bekah

I do really like hearing their stories and I love telling mine. Its especially awesome when its a couple that has been married 50 years.

  8. Zack

I can’t wait to get home to see the video now! Work doesn’t let me stream videos. Or go to some sites. At least this one isn’t blocked!

    I know of something awesome. A pure, unblocked, go-everywhere-you-want-to-go and do-everything-you-want-to-do, neutrality-driven, web-surfing, video-chatting, free-to-use-whatever-IM-client-you-want, freedom-to-avoid-Internet Explorer-like-the-plague, internet.

    Now that’s just AWESOME.

  10. oh, i love the stories of how people met, specially the look on their faces just like if they were living the moment again! And I love to remember how i met my boyfriend :)
Loved the video, and love the blog, and would love to have a book *)

  11. Stuart

This is a cute one. It’s funny when one of them forgets a part (usually the dude) and looks at the other for confirmation and is met with a “how could you forget”! Classic!

  12. Jordan C.

Such a cute song! Love 1000 awesome things!

I think listening to the “how they met” stories is awesome for couples who have been married for a long time. But, personally, I find them a little less cute coming from a couple who has been together less than a month and wants to tell EVERYONE that, omg, they’re dating, and, omg, they like each other a lot.

    …maybe I’m just being bitter.

But, back to the awesomeness, I like hearing older-folks stories. Like my parents. They met playing ping-pong in someones basement. And got engaged six weeks later.

    • Sydney

Kate, I completely agree with you 100%!- I find new couples like that so nauseating – and then of course they’re broken up a month later…
who could have seen that coming?

Maybe I’m a little bitter too.

    • Ginny

My parents is similar. My dad went to the bar to check out “the bartender with the big boobs.” They went on their first date May 15th, were engaged July 4th, and got married December 1st, 25 years ago.

  14. Woow. What an amazing video! Loved it :D

  15. Jen

I enjoy those stories too! They are usually so interesting and telling!

  16. My husband and I get asked this a lot because he’s American and I’m British; we now have a slightly edited version that’s quick to tell but has all the pertinent points of the first time we met.

I decided to try out for drill team my sophomore year in college so I could meet some nice boy-next-door types. He was in the band, and we met the first weekend of practice. We’ve been married 26 years and have 5 kids, all of whom have been in the band. We hope they all fall in love with someone wonderful and live happily ever after, like we have.

I would just like to say how much I love this website.

I’ve got one suggestion: When you write awesome things, please use inclusive language. I’m not straight, and when I tell people about my boyfriend and how we met, we are both men, so HE will be talking about HIS BOYFRIEND.

    Ya dig?

  20. Elizabeth

And of course, I wait every day after finishing reading that day’s Awesome Thing for the next AWESOME AWESOME THING!
    Once again,
    Awesome!

Colins story, song and video bring a deep sense of meaning when looking at Awesome things. Stuff like Tupperware & Concert lights going out before the band start, all trigger a real sense of being to me. Made me realise just how much I have been taking for granted. Cheers Colin for your work, and thanks for the shake up
