#997 Locking people out of the car and pretending to drive away

There are so many different levels to this classic gag.

There’s Version 1.0 which involves a car full of people, a gas station bathroom break, the locked door, and the slow rolling drive away while the victim knocks on the window and pretends not to care. This version is Locking People Out Of The Car And Pretending To Drive Away Lite, a tame version of the gag intended to induce a few giggles without any tense moments. Just some G-rated comic relief for the long drive home. Version 1.0 is the most commonly practiced version out there and is the officially sponsored and recommended version by 1000 Awesome Things.

Trouble

Next up is a version that’s a bit more advanced than Version 1.0 but not quite at the level of Version 2.0. We’ll call it Version 1.5, also known as The Big Tease. The Big Tease works as long as the victim leaves their car door open. That open door is critical to pull it off. To execute, the driver simply waits until the victim is approaching the car and then drives away slowly with the door hanging wide open like a big tease. The Big Tease works fine on small or large cars, but is especially effective in vans with sliding doors. You’ve got that big van door just sitting there wide open and the victim may figure it’s worth running and jumping for it. There’s really no telling what could happen in this situation. Just remember to be safe out there.

Next comes Version 2.0 which involves a car full of people, a gas station bathroom break, the locked door, and a complete drive away, lap of the gas station, and return after a minute or two. Big difference here is that Version 2.0 dials up the fear notch a little, instills a tiny bit of bootshake in our helpless victim. When the car comes back some name-calling goes down, but nothing too serious. Still — this one’s not recommended for children twelve and under. Let’s call it Rated T for Teen.

And then finally there’s the grandaddy of them all, the one and only Version 3.0. A real cooker, Version 3.0 involves a car full of people, a gas station bathroom break, the locked door, and a full-out drive away into the sunset, without any eventual return. The victim is left curbside, casually spooning up a McFlurry as they walk around for a couple minutes, expecting the car to come sweeping around the corner any second. But no… the car never comes back. Unless practiced in walking distance of the victim’s house, Version 3.0 can be devastating. And it’s rarely executed and not recommended for obvious reasons: its potential to destroy relationships…to destroy relationships…forever.

AWESOME!

  1. OMG i have just found this site – ITS AMAZING! Makes me so happy.
I freaken love this gag. I enjoy the old “let them get really close, then drive a little bit further” trick, soooooo hilarious and extremely frustrating for the victim involved. Makes me laugh uncontrollably

  2. My sister, brother, and I have been doing this to one another for years……even if we are in our 20’s it crack us up every time! I glad to know I am not alone.

  3. i love this website! Today after exams my friend was reading some of the awesome stories from this book! iI was amazed at how funny some of them were. Now all i want for Christmas is this book! LOL

  4. My dad does this when my siblings are taking too long to get to the car in the morning, but pretending he’s going to leave them stranded in the mountains for the day. Though it’s funnier in a public place with an audience to appreciate the work and effort.

  5. I admittedly didn’t read all the comments but I do believe there is one Version that has not been exposed. This Version has the potential loss of friends of “Version 3” but is similar to “Version 1.5”. So you begin with Version 1.5 but you “tease” the victim at a ever increasingly faster speed and when they are about to leap into the car….you slam on the brakes. They come to a slamming halt into the door.

  6. version 3.0 really made me laugh..
    This site is really great.

I found this site over yuor ted talks video. They say there’s a reason for everything in life. I would say that those bad things that happened to you were neccessarry so you can inspire millions of people every day.

Good job, I hope I will do something as big as you sometime :)

  7. Freak YES!
I do this all the time. I hit a pole once just because I was laughing so hysterically and looking at my friend glaring and flipping me off while walking fast and trying to open the door of my old wagon that I nailed a pole at like five and dented my bumper. Ah, life. Then I laughed so hard at that, that I literally almost peed my pants. Totally the number one memory I have from highschool. terribly proud that my light blue paint is still on that light pole in the parking lot.

  8. I once did this when I was learning to drive but it was by accident. We were driving in the country side and the instructor left the car with the door open, can’t remember why. Then I accidentally released the brake and started to move slowly away from the instructor, I got control of it quickly but he was freaked out. I don’t know if he’ll ever see the funny side of it but I always will; his expression was priceless!

  9. I was supposed to read one awesome thing a day but when I saw the link to this post, I said “that is so evil”, so I clicked on it.

My dad always does this to my mom. Sometimes she plays along, but at other times, my dad ends up with a deadly glare. A tip I guess: timing is important. Make sure the victim is not in a bad mood or something.

    :D

  10. This is a classic. One of my favs. I still use it on cousins, friends and even my wife. For me this is a top 25.

  11. Our version of this goes like this: the last person to the car is locked out, then person in the car says “dance!”. The locked out one looks around to see if anyone is nearby, yells at the driver, acts like they are just going to stand there, looks around again, (all the while we are yelling “dance!”) The door is not unlocked until the dancing has commenced!!!! Any kind of dancing allowed, the more embarrassing the better, and funnier!!!!

  12. Haha! This is funny only because now I know that the 3.0 happens to other people besides me!

  13. i did this yesturday to my best guy friend. it was his 21st bday so i was his dd. he decided to pee outside my truck so i pulled away and when he opened the door i threw it in reverse and the door smacked him in the head. soooooo funny!!

  14. “pretending” MIGHT be funny for those IN the car.
version #3-good to hear NOT recommended by awesome.
Over all, not the best self-esteem booster or friend-ship builder…
    I just don’t get it.

  15. hahaha, i tried this once, but lets call it Version 2.5. i locked my brothers out of the car, i had a dodge caravan. so they decided to jump on the back of the van. joking around, i decided i would back out of my parking spot and drive away, with them still on the back of the car. When i hit the gas, i hit it jus a little too hard and outta my rearview window i see them fall and tumble off the car. When they get in, my older brother thinks it would be funny and says he thinks he broke something. the entire hour ride home he was playing up his “injury”. they were both fine by the way. I recommend you dont try this at home.

  16. My older brother did version 2.0 to me this year. It made me laugh, actually :)

  17. I?d have to test with you here. Which isn’t something I normally do! I take pleasure in reading a post that can make folks think. Also, thanks for permitting me to remark!

  18. My parents always threaten me and my sisters with this and one time we started to drive away one my sister:)

  20. I work in a corporate office.
I sit behind a desk all day and I think I’m pretty quiet, which some people might tend to mistake for a serious or stern demeanour.
My lovely and totally awesome fiance sometimes picks me up after work… or, rather, after several attempts of trying to get within even remote reach of the door handle, I finally tear off my heels and sprint (because at this point sprinting is necessary!), grab the door and wrench it open and leap into the car, which is often still moving. Usually in full view of everyone else leaving at the time, including my boss and various office managers.

“Wow, Kay, was that you I saw running after your car the other night?”

Great fun, even if I AM the victim :)

you for your time due to this wonderful read!! I definitely savored every little bit of it and i also have you saved as a favorite to
see new information in your blog.

  23. I was wondering if you ever thought of changing the page layout of your
site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so
people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or two pictures.
Maybe you could space it out better?

  24. When I originally commented I appear to have clicked the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and from now on each time
a comment is added I recieve four emails with the exact same comment.
Is there a way you are able to remove me from that service?
    Many thanks!
