#949 Ordering off the menu at fast food restaurants

McDonald's Neopolitan Shake

Ever had a neopolitan milkshake from McDonald’s?

One where they layer the chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla flavors in the same cup, creating a thick, icy, slow-moving light-brown-swirls-with-pink-flecks taste sensation? Yeah, my friend Chad was a regular customer of those. Of course, when he was working at McDonald’s he got sick of the regular menu pretty quickly and started tinkering in the back like a mad scientist with his coworkers, developing exotic, unstable, and unpredictable meal creations with the ingredients on hand. Yes, there were failed attempts, like the Chicken McNugget Flurry, but sometimes they struck gold and created a new off-the-menu line extension. I guess this is fairly common, because there are reports of online McDonald’s employee communities, where insider recipes such as the McBrushetta and McPancakeBatterFunnelCakes are shared.

Now, my world opened up when I first realized with Chad that you could order off-the-menu at fast food restaurants. Since that time I’ve learned about a few other secret options around. Like for instance:

Wendy’s – The Grand Slam. If the single, double, or triple hamburgers at Wendy’s just don’t cut it for you, just go all out and order the massive four-patty grand slam. Also known as the Classic Quadruple or The Meat Cube.Freshly squeezed and piping room temperature

McDonald’s – Fries with Big Mac Sauce. Lots of people put fries right on the burger, which I agree tastes delicious. But this technique allows you to switch things up a bit and put some of your burger’s best feature right on your fries. Try to ignore protests from your arteries, and just ask for that a little cup of Big Mac Sauce on the side for dipping.

Starbucks – The Red Eye. A cup of coffee with a shot of espresso dumped in. Now, I’m not a huge coffee drinker, but apparently you can even upgrade this to two shots which is called a Black Eye.  I presume upgrading to three shots is called a Jumpy, Unblinking Eye.

Most Fish & Chip places – Batter Bits. I knew a girl who was all over these. She’d lean in and guiltily ask in a hushed whisper and the guy behind the counter would nod slowly and hand over a wet, greasy paper bag full of all the batter drippings that fell into the oil by accident. Yeah, this is the bottom of the barrel of off-the-menu stylings. It ain’t always pretty out there.

In N' Out's famous animal-style burger

In-N-Out Burger – Animal Style Hamburger. The well-known ‘secret menu‘ at In-N-Out features this heavenly gem — their regular burger patty cooked in mustard, then topped with extra pickles, extra spread, and grilled onions. Yessir, In-N-Out will whip anything up — including messy Animal Style Fries or even a 100×100 order (100 patties and 100 slices of dee-licious cheese.)

Subway – The Pizza Sub. Apparently this one’s like sasquatch. There are scattered sightings everywhere and a few grainy videos that may have been tampered with. Another favorite from Subway, though not technically a menu item, is simply ‘the old cut’, where they dig a trench in your bread instead of just slicing it, leading to better cold cut and veggie distribution. Also known for causing The Wing Effect, where your bologna hangs out the sides of your sandwich for some tasty pre-nibbles.

McDonald’s – Big Mac with Quarter Pounder patties. One last McDonald’s fixture — the ol’ bun-heavy Big Mac surgically altered to become a meat-heavy Big Mac with Quarter Pounder patties instead. Now you’re much less likely to get that dreaded All-Bun first bite.

Starbucks secret short cup

Starbucks – The Short Cup. Even though the smallest size on the Starbucks menu is a ‘Tall’, they do offer a secret ‘Short’ size behind the counter. Perfect for that between-coffee-breaks coffee.

Now, I’m only one man, so I’m sure there are hundreds of great off-the-menu gems that I’ve never heard of or know about. But that’s the beauty! There are all these little surprises just waiting to be discovered. What possible fast-food mouth love will we discover next?

Ordering off the menu at fast food restaurants is a great deal. Maybe you’re the loyal customer looking for that new taste. Maybe you have strict dietary restrictions so it’s either off-the-menu or no-menu-at-all. Or maybe you’re just a grumpy guy who makes flippant off-the-menu requests with a deep scowl and a foot-stomp.

But whatever the case, whatever your background, whatever your taste, I think we can all agree that it sure is nice getting a little something special for lunch now and then.

AWESOME!

  3. Deep frying the tortilla shells and putting sugar on them make them taste like elephant ears at mcds

  4. When I was pregnant I used to get a roast beef sandwich from Arby’s, then grab a side of Mac sauce from McDonald’s. That was awesome!

Dipping the chicken nuggets in chili at Wendy’s is also good.

Grabbing the mac and cheese from Church’s chicken and smothering it a burger from anywhere was ok.

I also enjoy grabbing a pizza from Papa Murpy’s then adding some extra toppings from home before cooking.

  5. I ordered a heart-attack at a Starbucks ones. Basically, it’s 1 regular coffee and 7 shots of espresso + a bit of hot milk and lots of sugar.

Makes you feel funny. Costs about 10 bucks – but totally worth it if you’re travelling around for 37 hours straight without sleep.

  7. My favorite menu hack is at starbucks, I order a large in a grande cup, leaves me lots of room for milk or cream, without having to pay extra and then pour out the coffee from the grande. Same works for a Short in a tall. Also helps get you over the 5-word minimum for orders at starbucks.

Grande bold = no coffee for you, better order a flavour shot.
tall bold in a grande cup = coffee!!

  8. “Now and then” is the operative phrase. Otherwise we’re talkin’ about heart disease and early death for sale, cheap.

  9. tim hortons
    1. toasted bagel with creme cheese and tomato slices

    2. ice cap made with chocolate milk

    can’t go wrong!

  10. At starbucks: blended strawberry apple juice instead of lemonade, the Naked brand juice they sell in bottles blended with a grande scoop of ice, marble hot chocolate(white and milk chocolate)

  11. At burger king, they have “little kings” which are great little hamburgers. more like a mini whopper. Every BK I’ve been to recognizes the name immediately. not sure why they never officially put them on the menu.

  12. Where I come from you can get a McFlurry of all the flavors. Its pretty gross, but totally awesome.

  13. At Starbucks in the late 90s when I worked there, we had a special after-hours staff meeting to learn to make Frappucinos. The next day, I made a regular coffee-flavored one and tossed in about six whole espresso beans before blending — really ups the coffee flavor. Wonder if I created the first off-the-menu Frapp? Didn’t take long for the customers to start customizing…an early customization was “blend it twice”. Sigh.

  14. I used to get Nerds Blizzards at Dairy Queen. Talk about your sugar rush! Unfortunately, my store stopped making them quite some time ago. Phooey! Guess I could always try to make my own…

  15. At Dairy Queens in texas you can actually order tacos & buritos. They also have a whole line of ‘hunger buster’ burgers, which are awsome! they also have this thing called the ‘dude’, which is a chicken fried stake patty in a sandwich, which is awsome!

  16. My favorites are from Jamba Juice: the Pink Starburst (not kidding, it tastes EXACTLY like a pink starburst) or a Peach Ring, both off the secret menu. a little pricy, but oh so tasty :)

  17. A friend of mine that used to work at DQ says to order an oreo blizzard and hand them a Hershey Cookies and Cream bar to be mixed in with it…. a little invention of his own and it’s good!

  18. Another really good Taco Bell secret is the Tostada. It’s flat hard taco with refried beans, lettuce, and cheese on the top. It’s awesomely good for vegetarians who don’t like tomatoes (like me ^-^) It’s only .89, and its really good. XD I remember when it used to be on the menu, but it’s not anymore

  19. A friend of mine once got a Dunkin Donuts breakfast sandwich between 2 glazed doughnuts. It was delicious.

  20. I had a friend who worked at McDonald’s and created a burger called the McGerbil. It was a regular burger but just with a chicken patty on it too, and basically anything else he felt like putting on it. He’s gone now, but if someone’s working who knew him I can still order it. It’s pretty great. Perfect if you can’t decide if you want beef or chicken. XD

  21. also at in-n-out if you tell them you want a root beer float, they’ll give you a cup with ice cream that you can fill yourself at the fountain

  22. The McGangbang from Mcdonald’s. It involves ordering a McChicken and a McDouble then craftily separating the patties of the McDouble placing the McChicken in between them. Not to many places will do if for you but it creates a cheap, filling, and delicious meal so it is worth asking. Otherwise if your not to big on self respect, you can do it yourself.

  23. When I used to work at KFC, we would make “donuts” by frying thawed biscuits. We would sprinkle with sugar or drizzle with honey after they came out of the fryer.

  24. Myself and my husband are vegetarian..So, when we go to Taco Bell, my husband always orders a supreme chalupa with fiesta potatoes instead of meat…
At sonic, I always order a burger with an egg+lettuce+tamato instead of the beef patty…

  25. Here in England, students and Forces personnel get their choice of free cheeseburger or McFlurry at Maccy Dees. Always order the Big Mac and free cheeseburger, then put the cheeseburger inside the Big Mac- You’ve just created the Big Lad.

  26. “McChurgers” are becoming popular here. A combination of 2 junior chickens and a mcdouble, which are all on the value menu. Also go to Booster Juice and order “Orangescicle” as a flavor. It’s delicious.

  27. Did a stint at McDonald’s.. a staff special, and I highly doubt you’d be able to order it, you’d have to pay for two grilled Chicken wraps..
but here goes.. a grilled chicken patty diced , along with diced tomotoes, onions, and peppers, and shredded cheese. Put all of that on a wrap, place another wrap on top.. don’t skimp on the cheese, and cook it in their oven for, like 7 minutes. Best quesadilla ever.
Then there’s the … ahem… “Gang Bang”. Don’t anyone shoot me on this one, and don’t try to order it, you might get kicked out, depending on the staff… I didn’t make up the name, but it’s popular among teens. It’s a Double Cheeseburger with added mayo, bacon, and a Junior Chicken patty in between the meat pattys.

Ask anyone who’s worked at fast food. Their is probably millions of choices out there.

  28. I have never worked at Mcdonalds but heres a good one that people in my town. Its called a McGangBang You take a double cheeseburger, put a McChicken in between the patties and then put one of their wraps in the middle of that. Enjoy!

  29. There’s a Caribou coffee near my work, and if I go in and order an eggnog hot chocolate they’ll make it for me. It is delicious! Unfortunately it’s a bit of a seasonal item, because they only have eggnog around during a certain part of the year. All the same, it’s just the thing for a really cold winter. :)

  30. Looks like I get to be the first comment on this post in 2011. ;-)

I remember reading this book, while sitting in a Chapters in Victoria, BC. Absolutely awesome! Dunno if you have ‘bookstore reading’ on your list of awesome, yet, but it’s a worthy addition. :-)

    With Love and Gratitude,

    Jeremiah

  31. at panera bread (not sure if its considered a fast food or not), we have a tomato mozzarella salad during the summer. its a menu item, but its not actually ON the menu, mostly because its such a pain in the butt to make. its chopped tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers tossed up in balsamic vinaigrette; piled on top of balsamic-y romaine lettuce and field greens and croutons; topped with mozz slices. its really good.
also, everyone that works at panera has their own special concoctions. examples: “pulled barbecue chicken sandwich” “spicy cheesy napa sandwich” “cheesy potato soup” “bageltinis (my personal creation =D)”
i have a sandwich that i came up with that i absolutely love, and actually got some people to try it =))

  32. Once when I was younger, I couldn’t decide whether to have an Oreo or Smartie McFlurry at McDonalds, so the woman at the counter gave me both mixes in one icecream.

  33. There are definitely loads of particulars like that to take into consideration. That may be a great level to convey up. I provide the ideas above as common inspiration however clearly there are questions just like the one you bring up where a very powerful factor will probably be working in sincere good faith. I don?t know if finest practices have emerged around things like that, but I’m sure that your job is clearly recognized as a fair game. Both girls and boys feel the impression of just a moment’s pleasure, for the remainder of their lives.

  34. well dunkin donuts has refills for 79-99cents depending on ounces, just bring in your own mug and pay way less than the usual $2.40, its funny cause most cashiers dont even know this and also if you order extra cream or milk and your coffee is too cold just asked for it to be steamed.

  35. Hello! I’ve been following your site for some time now and finally got the bravery to go ahead and give you a shout out from Humble Texas! Just wanted to say keep up the excellent job!
