#467 Guilty pleasure songs

We’ve all got some.

Just the other day my friend Vanessa and I were grabbing breakfast when we started talking about guilty pleasure songs. As I doused a tower of pancakes in a tidal wave of syrup we laughed about those songs you don’t really tell your friends about. You know, it’s those tracks on your iPod you’re afraid someone will find, your secret bubblegum pop playlist with the ironic title, or the last track on a distant mix CD that still pulls powerful strings on your achy breaky heart.

One of Vanessa’s guilty pleasures is The Sign by Ace of Base. Apparently her younger siblings got into it and at first the sugar-coated pop perfection swished and swirled together with Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys beats rising from their basement dance parties. But as she grew up The Sign separated itself and lodged firmly in her brain. Yes, it planted roots and settled in, growing catchy hooks… and fond memories.

For years Vanessa tried pretending her love for The Sign was ironic even though she knew deep down in her heart it was incredibly sincere. Her love never faded and the song kept making its way onto personal playlists and late night dream listens before falling asleep.

The good news is that as Vanessa got older she grew to accept the song, accept her musical loves, and most of all, accept herself. And maybe that’s the secret: Guilty pleasure songs are only guilty until you shout them to the world. So go ahead and don’t worry, we won’t judge you, because we have soft spots for The Bangles, Lionel Ritchie, and Toto, too.

AWESOME!

“Neil, I woke up this morning in the afternoon, 12:15 pm to be specific, and I poured myself a bowl of cereal. I ate it up while watching some tv, but as soon as I finished I realized it was lunch time. SOOOOO I proceeded to make myself a turkey sandwich with some chips and a cold can of diet coke. Waking up so late that it is necessary to eat two meals….breakfast and lunch.  AWESOME! Your blog and The Book of Awesome continue to make me laugh every day.” – Tess

  1. The influence of my parents is still stong on me. I’m 55 and lost both of my parents in the past couple of years, but there are still times when I’m rocking to a song in the car and I have this feeling that my parent’s “wouldn’t approve” of it. Why this feeling dogs me almost four decades after I moved out I don’t know, but that’s the guilty pleasure I get most often – listening to songs I love that my parent’s would hate.

  2. Moment of awesome: While I read this, Hello by Lionel Richie played on a commercial. I was overwhelmed.

  3. i have maybe a kinda like guilty pleasure
not with songs more with artists.

    On the first side
i love hardrock, funk and nearly all kinds of metal music
(not a guilty pleasure at all)

Then here is my guilty pleasure, mostly because nearly all
of my friends are super die hard metalheads:

Im also totally into for example cheesy pop music like shakira,
    avril lavigne, and kelly clarkson.

Then im also into various soft celtic/classical music
    and house and dance music.

A little wierd? I dont know.

  4. The Beatles, “Hey Jude”
Nancy Sinatra, “These Boots are made for walking”
Bruce Springsteen, “Born to Run” (all Bruce!)
    Abba, “I had a Dream”
    Led Zepplin, “Thank You”
Pink Floyd, “Shine on you crazy diamond”
Moody Blues, Neil Young and so many more!!!
Looking back at the posts here, I think I’m past the age for this game!

    1. After being here awhile now, nah…unless Neil tells me to leave, I’m not going anywhere from this~
      “Land of Hopes and Dreams”
“You’re just too good to be true… can’t take my eyes off of you”
      again-“Thank you!”

  5. There are definitely plenty of details like that to take into consideration. That may be a nice level to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up the place crucial factor will probably be working in trustworthy good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, however I am positive that your job is clearly recognized as a fair game. Each girls and boys really feel the influence of just a moment’s pleasure, for the remainder of their lives.

  6. I’ll bet NOBODY knows this one. a One hit wonder from an early 70’s teenage duo named “Chee-Chee & Pepe” – the name of the song is “I Know That I’m in Love”. This song and artist SCREAMS Guilty Pleasure!!! Go on YouTube – it’s there!! :-)

  7. I think this is my favourite awesome thing.
In my ipod I have tons of guilt pleasures songs and some years ago I made a CD called “Shame”. I took all the worse music from old Hard Drivers and burn the Shame.
One day this CD was on the car radio, and I give a ride for couple of friends. They criticized me, but love it and ask for copies.
Unfortunately the radio was stolen with the CD inside before I could do it.

  8. It isn’t a Don Henley love song by any means, but
it can also be done as a duet, and was made popular by Charlotte Church and Josh Grobin.
If the player cannot get it initially the main thing to do or
not. Here it is on You TubeThis compilation appears to be the
sounds of a baby crying then with laughter throughout as father and daughter play.

  9. I was suggested this blog via my cousin. I am now not certain whether or not this post is written by
way of him as nobody else know such precise approximately my trouble.
    You are incredible! Thank you!
