Fire trickles and drips across the sky, old folks huddle and cuddle and babies cry, teenagers squeeze sweaty palms and look up, up way high. Because light fills the night, kabooms bang in the air, conversation stops, jaws drop, we all crane our necks up … and stare. Yes, when those fireworks erupt, when they splash in the dark, when those bright waterfalls drip down into our park, we all ooh and ahh at them big beautiful sparks.
AWESOME!

When I was a kid, I used to hope that one of the “sparks” would make it all the way to the ground so I could pick it up and take it home with me.
Of course, now I’m wise enough to know that if the burning remains of the fireworks look like they’re coming close enough to touch you, you FREAKING RUN!
Last year, a guy setting off fireworks with hubby, knocked some over and they came shooting straight at all of us. I grabbed my kids up and hid behind a car. Luckily no one got hurt.
They really are an amazing invention, aren’t they? I mean, they can be REALLY dangerous, and yet really beautiful at the same time.
At least, they’re beautiful in the sky. Not when aimed at one’s face. Good to hear everyone was okay, Bekah!
That’s funny because as a child I was terrified that a burning fragment would land on me! The booming sound scared me, too. Watching fireworks as a kid was actually a stroke of bravery for me considering my fears.
I just love the turns of phrase, the unexpected metaphors! They still surprise and delight me! “… they splash in the dark, when those bright waterfalls drip down into our park.” Brilliant!
I have yet to see the big fireworks in the city. As a kid I’ve seen a little display in my hometown, but they didn’t last long and wasn’t really a big WOW, I guess for me as a kid it was, but the town quit doing it a long time ago. Hubby buys his own fireworks and him and some friends put on a show for us. Its fun.
This is a great blog and i have only just discovered it. Thanks for writing it. David
Nice to meet you, David!
When we set them off on July fourth with friends and family, everyone gets involved in the show!
Babies were smiling, chortling and laughing while I watched the closing fireworks in Disneyland last June… while the display and medley about wishes and dreams coming true made a big cry baby out of me and tears flowed down on Main Street…it was truly, spectacular to be in the moment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZaRPLGLQbc
