#917 The moment at a concert after the lights go out and before the band comes on stage

You go early, you grab a drink, you buy a T-shirt, you find your seat or you edge up to the stage, you listen to the opening act, you people watch, you watch watch, you talk to your friends, you guess what songs they might play, and then the moment finally arrives: the background music fades down, all the lights suddenly go out, and there’s total blackness.

You feel a massive wave of anticipation sweep across the crowd, people stand up, raise their arms, and scream — and everyone clamors for that first view of the band walking onstage.

AWESOME!

  1. I haven’t been to a concert for a few years, but Oh YA! It was for Bruce Springsteen and no words could describe the feeling better than AWESOME…through and through…~.~

    1. My boss just went and saw Rod Stewart in concert at Las Vegas 2 weeks ago and she’s still talking about it! I haven’t been to a concert in forever…I was pregnant with Lilly I think. It was Shinedown, but it was an outside show so there weren’t any lights to go out. I bet it is exciting. I get excited at the movies when the lights go dim after the previews. Sorry for piggy-backing off your comment Wendy…. I can’t comment on my own. I need someone to hold my hand. No… my comment box is messed up.

      1. THat’s happened to me before and then it just corrects itsels, somehow. The last time was when it was ending and it wouldn’t let me on at all!!! I was getting a real complex about it!
I’m strong as a horse with a few good rides left in me, so Bekah, you hope on anytime you like…anytime, awesome-mate:)

        1. LOL, Wendy!! Ok, I’ll hop on! I always keep a saddle in my purse just for times like this!!
Your comment just seriously made my day!

          1. No need to blow a shoulder packing that saddle sweetie, you can ride bare-back! (HA, ha, couldn’t resist:)

    2. My son and his wife just saw The Boss in Wash, D.C. last month and he said it was the very best show ever!

      1. I’d wager he actually exclaimed-
        “THE VERY BEST SHOW EVVVVVVVVER!!!”

p.s. So nice to see you here, Kathy!

        1. Have been busy with the new job and some other misc events, but trying to catch up! Nice to see you all, too!

    1. Ahhh, Max, the best of life yet awaits you! This truly is one of life’s great moments, as the lights go down and every takes an excited, deep breath and gets ready…

      1. 2008 was the last time I went to a play. I went to the Nutcracker with my boss. Loved it! It was the first time I’d ever seen it.
Ok… unless a kids cartoon come to life on stage play counts, then I went last year to see Phineas and Ferb with Lilly.

        1. Phineas and Ferb! I love that show. I love watching kids cartoons, especially the old ones from the 60s, like Spider-Man and Scooby-Doo. I love anything retro. lovethebadguy, I also really love watching plays. At my old high school I would try to go to all of the plays, especially if I knew someone that was in it.

  2. The last concert I saw was Roger Waters doing The Wall in Phila. 2 years ago. IT. WAS. EPIC!!! A world-turning event for me! Is there anything as mesmerizing as live music/theater/the arts?! No, I think not!

  3. Ah yes. Just experienced it watching a high school performance of “Flowers for Algernon”. Great play, watched it twice even though it’s like 21/2 hrs. long. The excietement and anticipation of something is almost as good as the event itself.

  4. I totally agree. It’s awesome when someone tell you that your favorite band will do a concert on your town. But it’s even better when you buy the ticket, because you don’t mind neither if it is so expensive, nor if it’s far from your place. It starts there.

You do not sleep as well as you could, you wake up early and the first thing that come to your mind is: “It’s today!”. When you get there, you talk to your friends and it seems like you have butterflies in your stomach. People keep coming around, and all of them feel that they have something in common.

But when the lights go out, and everybody starts screaming, what I really think it’s incredible awesome is that you have a tiny moment, perhaps less than 1 second, which there is silence. People hold their breath before the lights come on. Their eyes sparkle, they get dry mouth, their heart beat faster and faster. Then the band takes the stage and you can’t hold your scream. At this point, you realize that all the money and waiting time paid off. No one feels the pain in the legs, tiredness, thirst or hunger. It’s time.

  5. I completely agree! I recently went to an Eric Church concert and the build-up leading into the Headliner is electrifying!

  6. It is really awesome! Going to concerts is something that makes me extremely happy and it’s where I think it is valuable to spend my money. Nothing compares to when you are in the middle of the crowd waiting for that band or person you want to see so bad. It happened to me in almost every big show I’ve gone, but I’ll never forget the Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ and Paul McCartney’s concert. The whole way to the concert makes you nervous, you think that every second will count for you to get there, you spend all day long talking about it or standing in the line, but anyway, the moment between the lights going down and the band coming on stage is unbelievable. What you have wished so much will be concrete in this very moment. You hug a friend or anyone on your side and scream like crazy because you know that in any second you will see all you have wanted for so long. You may not be so close to the stage, but to hear everyone screaming with you is an indescribable feeling and for sure, this is an awesome thing.

  7. THAT FEELING. It’s just amazing, there is nothing that I can compare with it. It happened to me, but it is so much better when is your damn favorite band playing up there. I could not go to Rock in Rio, but fortunately RED HOT decided to make a concert here in Sao Paulo too. that had never happened to me before, like, I was there, just ready to see something that I really had waited my whole life to do so. I did not care about nothing else there, no matter how good or bad were the lights, or the concert’s place, or even the sound quality (ok, I cared about it). i was just about to enjoy, for sure the most freaking insane two hours of my life. And also, a few months later I got my first tattoo, in a tribute to them.

  8. Absolute awesome! When the lights goes out is the best moment and the difference in going to a concert and listen the music in your home, for example. You keep thinking in the concert many days before it. On the day you wake up more happy, anxious and excited and you started to count the hours for the concert. When you are in the middle of the crowd you realise that all money that you spend on the ticket was very worthwhile, all expectation for see a person or a band that you really like is amazing, especially if it is a band that goes to your city a few times or it’s the first. With this thought i hope to Jack Johnson return to Brazil to i have this felling again.

  9. That is totally true! I am really into rock bands shows and I do whatever I can to be as close as possible of the stage. I will never forget the U2 show in Brazil 2005. I had waited for that show my hole life, and when the day finally arrived, I was decided to be in the front line!
I went to stadium at 9 a.m. to be one of the firsts. Passed 5 hours, the gate was finally opened and the fans could get in. I crossed the field running as fast I could, reaching the grid. I was so close of the stage that stretching my arms I could feel like touching the stage!
But still had more 6 hours to the big moment. The second waiting was like a torture. The crowd was pushing, trying to be closer of the stage. Had no space to sit, and the heat was intense. As the daylight goes out, and the reflectors are turned on, you fell that the moment is coming.
Suddenly, the place is dark, the crowd starts to jump and scream. My heart starts to bit like never did before and a rush goes throw my body like a hurricane. The moment was finally there! The song “City of blinding lights” starts and nothing else matters. The emotion was unpredictable!
I will never forget that night!
