Hunter S. Thompson had a reputation for being “THE” connoisseur of alkaloids and all things psychoactive. In an interview by High Times Magazine in the late 70’s he was asked to name his favorite drug. He thought about it and replied “There is nothing better than a Big Ole Nixon.” When pressed for details – he just smiled and said, you know, a Big Ole Nixon!

Within days, the offices of High Times were deluged with requests for where they could score some Big Ole Nixon. Some thought it was a new form of acid, maybe some six-way blotter. Still others thought it had to be something out of Colorado … possibly the legendary puffball fungus that when ingested provided exclusively auditory hallucinations. A group of chemical anthropologists working with Andrew Weil suggested that the reference to “Nixon” had to mean this substance got you incredibly buzzed leaving you with no memory of the event afterward and set off for South America.

High Times could not help these intrepid explorers of wetware. But they writer of the story recontacted HST and pleaded for clarification. In the next month’s issue there it was right up front under errata and clarifications: A Big Ole Nixon is nothing more than a gigantic morning dump.
